Talmage sny?: “Seated in some Vmpretendinir law-office, or in some jiuberuatorr&l i'liair, dr in some quiet Jfarm-lionse, is Hie ithu who will be the >»ext President of the United Srutea.” The LeKislatm e of New Jersey has passed a law which imposes a fine of twenty dollars upon every person who Ikclls a cigarette to a child under six teen years of age. The stand taken by New Jersey is certainly commendable, but it doesn’t go far enough. Cigarettes isow the seed of disease in all, old as well ns youiisr, and their sale should be entirely prohibited by law. It is said that the wife of Alexander Bell, the man of telephone notoriety) lias the disposition of a saint and the face of an angel. The lady is deaf nltd dumb, and in spite df it Bell is said to have fallen madly in love on firstsight. Jt was his beautiful devotion to his first and only love that opened to him the avenues *>f l&mc and fortune, and gave to the world the benefits and won ders of the telephone. It is hoped, therefore, that the explanation may not be required. The injustice done to myself I am willing to ignore; that done lo others I nnist have the privi lege of endeavoring to rectify. The whirligig of time in its revolutions will bring about rcvtiigefe, and justice is sure of vindication. WAS IT KOT KXCU&ABLU ? The Hon. Philip B. Thompson, mem ber of Congress from llarrodsburg, Kentucky, on last Friday* the 27th Hit., shot and killed Walter U. Davis at llarrodsburg Junction, Ky., fov Re daction of ins wife. It is currently rfimored that Thom)i- son’s wife was addicted to drinking, HTurtnatxians, nimmg- out me resorted to the hellish expedient, and managed to get her in ah intoxicated tonditiou and accomplished her ruin. Tlie shooting took place 'oft board the train for Chicago, iunncdiutcly after which Mr. Thompson returned home, entered Judge Harden’s court, tnnde a full statement of the case and tvas held to bail iu the sum of $5,000 ♦onwait the autron of die grand jury, lloth of the actors in the fearful trage dy were very wealthy, and had many friends and sympathizers. A 'Washington special to the Timcs- Democrat says: “The publication of the affair has created much sensation at (lie capital. Mr. Thompson is one of the best known of the Kentucky delegation in Congress, not only on ac count of his youth, but also on account of the prominence he lias achieved in legislative matters. While none of the particulars of the killing are known here* the very general impression among those who know Mr. Thomp son is that ho had strong" provocation for the deed. He is not a man of hasty temper; on tiffi contrary, he is always amiable and courteous, and prefers to say a kind word and do a kind deed rather than say or do difcagrfeeable things. He is very popular with the members of both parties in the House, and among the members now in the city great regret is expressed at the misfortune that has overtaken him. He is thirty-eight years of age;" weighs about 145 pounds; is about five feet ten inches in height, and is qtfite boy ish in appearance. He has a charming daughter in the convent at George town. He has also a son about twelve years old at his homo in HavrodsbUrg.” The unfortunate Congressman is meeting with much genuine sympathy in his native Static. The Louisville Courier-Journal justifies the killing of Davis, and says of Mr. Thompson: “It can be truly stated that a gentler, more amiable or less aggressive man docs not live. The soul of generosity and geniality, without a vice in tlie world, pains-taking and hard working, he is beloved of all who know him, and will have with- him- hi this dire bereavement the hcnft'of overv man, woman and child in the Coiuuiou- weaith.” Perhaps if the letter of law were rigorously enforced* tlie defendant would suffer the penalty of Its Viola tion. But unlawful as it probably was the circumstances of the case were so pecnliarly aggravating, that If Would tie a difficult matter, indeed, to find a Jhry of men to render a verdict of “guilty.” “When Dishonor reaches tmr hearths Law dies and Murdei' takes the Anscel form of Justice.” —When you lon t just tv,„ w w hr>t ails y<»r. when y< u JVcl adie* cud }>ai.ks atl w>n you fee! tin.! a i fuiot. A may be; thetfe can hardly be a question* concerning the wisdom of the pur chase; The deveiomnent bf a single school tins year with the small liilap- propriated balances ncoumulated in tbe treasury from the preceding years has not only an elevating influence upon the entire township, if the pdaple will be only patriotic enough to rise above their sectional prejudices with the Board: but it fosters a tendency that will certainly end in the permanent location and development of every white and colored school in tiro town ship. That there must be a beginning is not much more evident than ihat the Vesfilt indicated will be simply a mat ter of time. 1 must, therefore, eolii- uiend tlie wisdom of the purchase and exhort my people to bide with patient, cheerful acquiescence tlie dalvning of that brighter day to which this pur chase is the morning star. your issue of the 10th, every word of which I heartily endorse, and pledge my efforts to assist in fulfilling.
