Messrs. Editors: In the last num
ber of the Southern Cultivator is an
article on “Terracing” by Dr. H. H.
Cm y, of LaGrange, tia. I have been
so favorably impressed with the piece
that I have concluded to condense it
for the benefit of yoiir leaders who are
interested in farming.
The cotton lands of thte Piedmont
Bdt are peculiarly liable to denuda
tion. Clean culture and repeated
freezings and thawings leave the soi!-
so triable and disintegrated that a very
slight shower carries on the work of
erosion. The rains carry the fertile
soil first to the “bottoms,” and then,
to complete the devastation, bury it
underneath the sterile sand and clay.
Hillside ditches generally aggravate
instead of remedying the disease; but
out of this same old custom of ditch
ing originated the idea of “terracing,”

The Detroit Free Press states that
the present Senate Sergesnt-at-Arms,
Mr. Bright, has set an example of civil
service reform which, for its practical
lessons, ought to bo introduced into
other branches of the service. One of
his subordinates in charge of thq Sen
ate store-room, teams ami stables, re
cently died, and w as not in bis grave
before an applicant applied, asking for
the vacancy. To his great astonish
ment and delight Colonel Bright told
him he could have it, and could lake
hold immcdiatelv. The applicant be
gan thanking him profusely, when
Bright told him that ho must explaiq
that, owing to the promotion of the
employes all the way down, the place
really left vacant by the death of the
employe was not the twelve hundred
dollar office the applicant was asking
for, but a place in the stable to curry
horses at one dollar a day. ,The appli
cant said lie Wouldn't want that place,
and withdrew.
The trial of Timothy Kelly for fcc'm-
plicity in the murder of Cavendish and
Burke was resumed in the Green
btreet Court House at Dublin on last
Friday morning. After calling a few
more witnesses, the Crown announced
that their case was closed. The case
for the defense was then opened.
Kelly’s counsel announced they would
produce witnesses to prove an alibi fof
the prisoner. Kelly’s brother was
their first witness. He testified that
he w’us in the company of the prisoner
on the Gth ot May. On cross-exami
nation his evidence conflicted with
that given by the employer of the
prisoner. The defense called four
friends of Kellv. all of whom swore
The method originated in Chambers
county, Alabama, on the plantation of
a Mr. Chisolm, who, observing the
natural terraces formed on an old,
neglected hillside by tin overrrrown
ditches, took practical advantage of
the hint. Thirteen years ago he oper
ated on one of his rolling fields with
such success that, although it has often
been planted in cotton since, there is
not a sefir or break in its surface.
A Mr. Orme bought the place from
Mr. Chisolm and extended the system
over five hundred acres, reducing as
high grades as twenty-five degrees to
perfect terraces or huge steps.
To describe the work: First, the
instruments needed are a level and a
graduated rod. Any sprt of leveling
instrument may be used, but by fi r the
best for this purpose is a little hand
instrument, weighing not over one-
1mlf pound, very accurate, costing
about ten dollars, and used by en
gineers in making preliminary topo
graphical surveys. It can bo bought
of any dealer in engineering instru
ments". If this he used, the rod should
be a simple wooden bar, nine feet long
and of about a squaie inch cross sec
tion. On this vodj at a height from
