McCak- Iev & Co. Apl 12 —Reports from the country arc to the effect- ihat the farmers are badly behind in preparing and planting their crops. As yet very little corn has been planted, and it is now about or r-'ar the usual time for planting cotton, it is needless to say that the condition of •affairs reported is a5t attributable to the indolence of onr farmers, but to the unusually bad and inclement wcath- ter for the past two or three months. —The postoffice department has is sued an order amending the postal rcgulations'so to provide that all letfers upon which one full rate of postage has been prepaid and all postal 'cards shall be forwarded TrorA the 'office to which they are addressed to any other office at the request of the person addressed, or of the party twWdse card may he upon the envelope, or whose name may be signed to Lie postal card, without additional charge of postage. Such Forwarding must be continued until the party addressed is reached. " The Peach Chop.—The evidence is getting more decided that the peach crop his not been injured to any great extent by the recent cold snaps. This is the case not only in our own county but reports indicato the same prospect all over th6 Plate. Tlte scare seems to have been premature. SPRING STOCK BUCKEYE MOWERS AND Osborn* K. Thompson. And another life has phased from tlirfe to eternity. Winnsbofo and Fair- field county have sustained a loss of no little moment in the death of our late fellow-citizen, Mr. O. R. Thompson, of this place. The deceased was strick en with paralysis several years ago, and Up to the time of Ills death was in very feeble health. On Saturday Mr: Thompson was bp and going about as usual, hiiH in the afternoon of the same day was taken suddenly ill, and died atone O’clock on Sunday tnoi ning of apoplexy, being in the sixty-fourth year of his age. The subject of this sketch was born and reared hi Fairfield county, and in early life was a clerk in the establish ment dff D. Aiken & Son. In 1850 he elected Clerk of tiie Court and served foV two successive terms, performing the arduous and responsible duties ol' the office with ability, skill and integ rity. A few > c^rs previous to and during the war he was employed in merchandizing, and aiadtt friends of all with whom ho cathO in contact. In 1876 Mr. Thompson was elected Judge of Probate, being thb nominee of both political parties, and served for two years. H.6 was ft conscien tious. painstaking and altogether ac ceptable official. Mr. Thompson was thrice married —first to Miss Laughliu, next to Mrs. Richmond (nee Berkley), and last to-Mist McMaster, allot' whom preceded him to the grave. He leaves eight children. He was for several years before his death an eider in Scion Presbyterian church, living to the end a pious, consistent and Christian life. Mr. Thompson was ever active, ever useful, always public spirited, bnt at the same tfmi went about the perform ance of his duties, public and private*, in a qthcr, hnmbie ana unassuming manner. The life and career of the lamented dead is one worthy of imita tion by young and old alike, and unos tentatious trt it was, it is destined to leave an impress upon the living. The remains were interred in the Presbyterian graveyard on Sunday afternoon at half-past five o’clock-. The funeral ceremonies were conducted by the Rev. J. S. Connor, of the Metho dist church, and the Rev. John T. Chalmers, of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian chtirch. The pall-bearers were selected from among the most, intiinate friends of the deceased, viz: Judge W. R. Robert son, Major T. W. Woodward, Capt. I. N. Withers, Messrs. Thomas Jordan, James A. Brice and Joseph C. Cald well. An unusually large concourse of people were present to do honor to the dead. Howe.— The Rev.George Howe^D.b., LL.D., died at his residence in Columbia at half-past five o’clock on Sunday, the loth inst. Dr. Howe’s death was caused by an injury received by being thrown from a buggy two W three weeks ago. The deceased was a pro fessor in the Presbyterian Seminary in that city. The ElectionCases.—Itis rumored that Attorney General Brewster and judge Bond both favor postponing the election trials until the next regular term of the United States Court, which will bo in November next-. The Dis trict-Attorney proposes to bring them to trial at the present term if practica ble, and hence the matter is enveloped indoubt. Death.—Intelligence has reached ns of the death of the Rev. Thds-. W. Smith, of Union county, who died ftt his residence in that comity of pneu monia several days since. Mr. Smith was for over twelve years pastor, of Little River Baptist church, in the southwestern portion of Fairfield, and daring his long and acceptable pas torate made many warm friends. The deceased was about forty-five years of age, and leaves a widow and three children. His nntimeiy death will be sincerely mourned by his friends and acquaintances in his old home.
