—Reports from the country arc to
the effect- ihat the farmers are badly
behind in preparing and planting their
crops. As yet very little corn has been
planted, and it is now about or r-'ar
the usual time for planting cotton, it
is needless to say that the condition of
•affairs reported is a5t attributable to
the indolence of onr farmers, but to
the unusually bad and inclement wcath-
ter for the past two or three months.
—The postoffice department has is
sued an order amending the postal

of postage. Such Forwarding must be
continued until the party addressed is

The Peach Chop.—The evidence is
getting more decided that the peach
crop his not been injured to any great
extent by the recent cold snaps. This
is the case not only in our own county
but reports indicato the same prospect
all over th6 Plate. Tlte scare seems to
have been premature.

And another life has phased from
tlirfe to eternity. Winnsbofo and Fair-
field county have sustained a loss of no
little moment in the death of our late
fellow-citizen, Mr. O. R. Thompson,
of this place. The deceased was strick
en with paralysis several years ago,
and Up to the time of Ills death was in
very feeble health. On Saturday Mr:
Thompson was bp and going about as
usual, hiiH in the afternoon of the same
day was taken suddenly ill, and died
atone O’clock on Sunday tnoi ning of
apoplexy, being in the sixty-fourth
year of his age.
The subject of this sketch was born
and reared hi Fairfield county, and in
early life was a clerk in the establish
ment dff D. Aiken & Son. In 1850 he
elected Clerk of tiie Court and served
foV two successive terms, performing
the arduous and responsible duties ol'
the office with ability, skill and integ
rity. A few > c^rs previous to and
during the war he was employed in
merchandizing, and aiadtt friends of
all with whom ho cathO in contact.
In 1876 Mr. Thompson was elected
Judge of Probate, being thb nominee
of both political parties, and served
for two years. H.6 was ft conscien
tious. painstaking and altogether ac
ceptable official. Mr. Thompson was
thrice married —first to Miss Laughliu,
next to Mrs. Richmond (nee Berkley),
and last to-Mist McMaster, allot' whom
preceded him to the grave. He leaves
eight children. He was for several
years before his death an eider in Scion
Presbyterian church, living to the end
a pious, consistent and Christian life.
Mr. Thompson was ever active, ever
useful, always public spirited, bnt at
the same tfmi went about the perform
ance of his duties, public and private*,
in a qthcr, hnmbie ana unassuming
manner. The life and career of the
lamented dead is one worthy of imita
tion by young and old alike, and unos
tentatious trt it was, it is destined to
leave an impress upon the living.
The remains were interred in the
Presbyterian graveyard on Sunday
afternoon at half-past five o’clock-. The
funeral ceremonies were conducted by
the Rev. J. S. Connor, of the Metho
dist church, and the Rev. John T.
Chalmers, of the Associate Reformed
Presbyterian chtirch.
The pall-bearers were selected from
among the most, intiinate friends of the
deceased, viz: Judge W. R. Robert
son, Major T. W. Woodward, Capt.
I. N. Withers, Messrs. Thomas Jordan,
James A. Brice and Joseph C. Cald
well. An unusually large concourse
of people were present to do honor to
the dead. May he sleep in peace I
