Subdung Obohabd Fists.—All of the
Insect pests which infest orchsrds and gar
dens in the Atlantic States and the South
hare not yet appeared, but most of them
will unless the greatest vigilance is main
tained. The following practical notes from
various authorities are of value to horticul
turists. Oils of all kinds are deadly to
most insects. Kerosene can only be used
by diluting with water. To mix oils with
water first combine them with milk, then
dilute as desired with water. Sour beer
and molasses attract moths, spread on
boards placed in the orchards or on trunks
of trees. Paris gr^eu is very effectual
when it can be well applied; one pound
mixed with twenty-live pounds of flour or
plaster is sufficiently strong. Of London
purple use only 1 part by weight to 50 parts
of flour or plaster.
The common ground beetles, the lace-
wirged flies and the well known‘lady bugs’
are old friends of the horticulturists and
should be protected.
As regards the noxious insects, the cod
im moth ranks, for destructiveness, nearly
at the top of the list. Paper or cloth bands
are used, applied every ten days through
spring and early summer and lu connection
with the use of a proper w ash. The apple
tree borers, of which there are several
kinds, are enemies of the apple, the quince
and some other trees. "When observed,
cut the larvse out with a knile and place a
sheet of tarred roofing felt about the collar
ot the trees to prevent further ravages.
Dustings of lime are effectual wtth the
cherry and pear slugs, abundant in moist
regions, such as about Puget Sound.
The plum curculio, which has not yet
made its appearance, is an enemy tliat at
present cannot be conquered. There is no
remedy known except the jarring process,
to commence as soon as the fruit sets and
jar the tree 3 times a week for a month.
This shakes off the curculio bitten fruit,
end it should be gathered up and destroyed.
The steel-blue beetle, known as the grape-
hea beetle, mpe the vine in the bud; the
larvie ieed on the leaves in the summer
The beetles are jarred (ff the vines m the
early morning, over an inverted umbrella,
or lime is used for the larvse. One ounce
of alum to a gallon of warm water destroys
the strawberry worm, so does white helle
bore. Hand-picking is about the only
remedy for the gooseberry fruit worm.
The currant borer is troublesome. Cut
out and bum all Infected branches; do the
same with the raspberry twig girdler.
DOMESTIC.
A novelty in cake is made thus:
Bake a loaf of white cake or of corn
starch cake; have the loaf when baked
about three inches deep. When dona
and cold, pat ou the top of the loaf pie-
Cfab of orange; these should be out in
the shape and sf the size of a caramel.
Put them on as close together as possi
ble, and have them smooth or even if
you can. Then cover the cake, orange
and all, with frosting. If corn-starch
cake is made follow this rule: One cup
of flour, one cup of corn starch, one
heaping oup of white sugar, half a oup
of butter, beaten with the sugar until it
is light cream, one large teaspoonful of
baking powder, and the whites of four
eggs, beaten to a stiff froth and put in
last; a large half cap of sweet milk
should be stirred in with the batter and
sugar after they are well beaten. This
cake does not keep well, and should be
eaten while fresh. A nice white cake
to be covered with orange is made by
using the whites of five eggs, one cup
of milk, half a oup of butter, oue tea-
cpoonful of baking powder, one oup and
a half of sugar, and about three cups of
flour.

Waste-Fateh Baskets.—Handsome
waste-paper baskets can be made by
covering a peach-basket outside and in
with turkey-red'calico, or with sileeia,
or with more expensive material in some
bright color, and tflen crocheting a cov
er or lambrequin out of macreme twine.
This cover should be about half as deep
as the basket, to allow space for a fringe
to be tied ill; as this should reach to
the bottom of the basket, it is just as
well to use some cheap c overing for the
basket. This <nay be used for a work-
basket instead of one for papers, if yon
please; in this case to the upper rim of
the basket fasten a small pmcnsbiou, a
needlebook and oue or two little pock
ets.

“Abb those cakes new maple sugar?”
he asked, as he halted before a stand
on Wall street
“They are, sir.”
“Made this winter?”
“Tea, sir,”
“From the pure sap ?”
“The pure sap, sir.”
“And not adulterated?’'
“Not in the least. How many will
you have?”
“Not one. I am looking for some
cakes ot old maple sugar—some at laast
a year old, I think new sugar un
healthy. ”
“I'lf tell you what, sir,” said tha
keeper of the stand, as he gave his voice
a confidential pitch, “if you want six
cakes at five cents each, I’ll admit that
I lied about it and this is old sugar
polished up with a rag. Oome, sir,

The violation of spy of nature’s laws
brings its warning by the feeling of dis
comfort. Exposure will induce colds,
throat disease, consumption, etc., all of
which give warning by a troublesome
cough. Use Dr. Bull’s Cough Syrup in
time, and remove both the cause and effect
of your discomfort.
Protecting Ukciiabds. -Woods,or any
thing of the kind, to protect orchards, are
a very good thing, if protected on the pro
per side, but nine times out of ten the pro
tection is on the wrong side, which is al
most always seen on the north or west
tide, whereas it should be on the east and
sjuth sides. It is the cold that injures or
chards and the protection on the north or
west will scarcely make it any warmer.
An orchard should always Lave a northern
and never a southern exposure. And why?
Because the southern exposure will cau *
the buds to expand so early that the frost
will nearly always catch or kill or damage
them. On the contrary, a northern expo
sure will keep them back until after dan
ger from frost lias passed, if the frost
melts away before the sun reaches the
bloom, the fruit will not be killed; but if
the orchard has an eastern exposure, so
the early sun can reach the bloom, the
fruit will nearly almost always be killed
by a sharp frost. If the orchard has a
western exposure, or is protected by dense
woods of tall Umbers on the east, the trost
will melt away hefore the sun reaches it.
The orchard thus protected will bear eve
ry year. I have noticed this for many
years and know it to t>e true.

■Why the Czar retired: There was a
company of gentlemen engaged in a
little game of cards in a prominent gen
tleman’s parlor one night lately. It
grew late and fears were expressed by
the party that they were trespassing up
on the kindness of the mistress of the
house, who, by the way, was not pres

To keep the knives and forks in good
condition, wipe them as soon as possible
after being used, as the longer they are
left with stains on them the harder they
will be to clean; have then a jag of
hot water to put them into as soon as
done with, and wipe dry with a soft
flannel. When they are not in nse rub
the steel parts with a flannel dipped in
oil, let it remain two hours and wipe
dry; or dust the blades and prongs
with quicklime, finely powdered; wipe
off in an hour or two and wrap them m

Harness is more rapidly injured in sum
mer than in winter. It is sometimes
soaked with rain, and again subjected to
heat and drying, and the perspiration oi
horses does it no good, if kept well oiled,
all these influences will cause little injury.
There are many different applications used
and different modes are adopted for em
ploying them. A common way is first to
wash thoroughly with soap and warm wa
ter and then to apply neats-foot oil, as the
best oil for the purpose.
Rye meal would make an excellent food
for cows If fed in slop or upon cut hay.
It would be well to grind with it a small
proportion of corn; two bushels to ten of
rye would make a good mixture. To use
it in the best manner it should be mixed
with water into a thin slop and left for
twelve hours to steep, and then poured
over the cut-fodder and well stirred with
it. It is not so rich in oil as corn, but by
adding to it a little cottonseed-meal this
defect would be easily made up.
I re low price of wheat is greatly dis
couraging to the English farmers. After
seven years of greater or less failure, they
are doubting now whether a good crop
would pay at present low prices. The
acreage sown to wheat this year is much
smaller than usnal. Thus the evil'o' low
prices corrects itself, and the farmer who
goes on without varying for high or low
prices has the best success.
There are said to be 50 injurious insects
m our vegetable gardens, 50 m our vine
yards, while seventy-five attack oar apple
trees and more than fifty our grain fields
Beventy-five million dollars is estimated as
the damage done to the wheat in Illinois
in one season, ana nearly ten years ago the
annual loss in the United States from in
sect depredations alone was estimated at
nearly $400,000,000.

some fine starch. Put a few lumps iu

ter to dissolve it. After you are sure it
is dissolved let it stand until the starch

and then powder it and put it in a soft

out. This is very healing and answers
admirably any purpose the powder is
supposed to do.

Immense Demand
for Vegetine.
W C are not at all surprised to learn taat the
demand of the people everywhere for that
famous medicine, Vegetine, la constauily becom
ing more and more extended. It has long been In
demand all over our own country, and had some
tiife ago made Its way Into various foreign lands.
At the present time the esteemed proprietor, Mr.
H. R. Stevens, of Boston, is sending It to order to
some ot the remotest foreign countries; and It
aeetni now evident that Vegetine la to become a
universal medtelns. It la a “patent medicine,"
but it has gained Its fame and made Ita way every
where on Us own Intrinsic merita. Such were the
unmistakable and undeniable results of the use ot
this astonishing and, at this day, world-tenewped
medicine, in speedily effecting cures of the very
numerous diseases or ills for which It was de
clared to be a remedy, that people everywhere
were open and decided in expressing their opinion
that thia -‘patent medicine" mast not only bo
ranked equal with, but altogether superior to, all
the regular “doctora’ stuff” that had ever been
given in sickness.
There was and there could be no dispute about
toe astonishing cures effected by the medicine.
The doctors could not deny them—especially as
many of snch cures had been effected in the most
respectable, wealthy and well-known families,
where the suffering Invalids had obtained and
taken the Vegetine as a last resort, after the regu
lar physicians had utterly failed to do them any
good.
Moreover, testimonial letters from perfectly
well-known persons in high standing and of un

medicine.

does she strike in all, and how far can
her voice be heard when she strikes her
thumb?
