Are farmers ready for •owing and planting? Every implement should be provided beforehand, that no time may be wasted in making purchases or repairs after the work should begin. We have known a halt day of plowing to be lost because the whiffletreea wete not at hand, gome farmers start out with their spring plowing without a single plowpoint in stock, and when one is needed, the team is taken from the field and driven to the store. Such a Joss ot time la a serious mal ter, and should be thoughtfully guarded against by ample provision of all such arti cles of the farm. It is a poor time to mend a barrow when it should be at work la tbe field. We do not favor that economy—If it may be so called—that relies upon the neighbors for many of tbe tools of tbe farm There are certain farm implements that may be owned In pfjtnership,. as a roller or reaper, but the constant borrowing of rakes, forka, etc., is not a wise and econ omical practice. Be provided with all these essential farm tools, and have them in good order, and at hand when the time arrives for using them. How is the time to look to these mat ters, and make all needed preparations for tbe busy days tnal will soon be here. In ihe peace of winter prepare for tbe war of spring. Tam* t'HEEfr.—-One of the pnme secrets of success in sheep breeding is to have quiet, tame animals This Is true in all branches of breeding, and ne truer of any than in sheep breeding. A wild fiock ot sheep will not be as profitable as a tame flock of tbe same natural quality. In order to have the sheep tame they should always be treated in tne kindest manner, and considerably petted when that is prac tical. If a floe km aster begins early with the lambs, banc ling them often, and be particularly careful never to scare them,be will stand a pretty good chance of havu ? a tame flock; but it is scarcely necessar) to say that be must see to it that they are not harrassed by anybody or anything. It there is a dog on the premises, keep him from interfering with the sheep, if you have to kill him. The flock is worth mueh more than the dog. Hired help must be taught to go among sheep gent'y. Give then good care, kind treatment, and pro tect them from the annoyances of the cnar- acter we have named, and tbe result will be a tame and quiet flock, if it has any natural merit in it Colts should not be permitted to stand on a plank, cement, paved or any bard floor the first year, as these are liable to seriously t fleet tbe feet and legs Unless the yard where tbe colts run in the winter has a sandy or fine, dry, gravelly soil, it should be well littered, so as to keep their feet dry. Mud or soft, wettish ground is apt to make tender hoofs, no matter now well bred they may be. One reason why the horses in one district grow up superio' to those in another in hoof, bone, muscle and action is because it has a dry limestone and siiictous soil. When the mare is at work do not let tbe colt run with her; and if she cfcmes back fiom her werk heated, allow her to get cool before suckling the colt, as her oveibested milk is liable to give the foal diarrtou. Mr. Reser farms but eighty acres, but be has been remarkably successful, and his suc cess has, observes tbe Topeka Farmer, in spite of drouths, verified tbe repeated statement that more grain can be raised from a well tilled field of ten acres than from lorty acres pooily tended. The parts of animals generally used for glue making are tbe paring ot bides aud skins irorn tanneries and slaughter houses kiiown as glue pieces, fleshing, pelts from furriers hoofs slid ears ot cattle, horses and sheep. Animal skins in every form, when unacted upon by tannic acid, are ex cellent material for the glus-maker. It is said that the palings of oxm and'other thick bides make the best glue. Fish-bones the core of horns, sinews and animal mem- branca are all utilized for the same purpose. Lambs can be made to shear from t wo to four pound! more wool by a little exira care and feed during the winter. The extra wuol will more than pay tor the ex tra feeding, and the result will be a much larger and sUonger sheep. For this pur pose feed good clover hay, with bran, oata and corn mixed iqualiy. Tax white of a hen’s egg contains 84.8 percent, of water, 12 of albumen. 2 of fat, regar, and membianes, and 12 per cent, of mineral matter; but tbe yolk con tains 51.5 per cent, of water, 15 of ca-eine and albumen, 80 of oil and tat, 2.1 of cot- onng mailer and L4 per cent, of mineral matter. Ths economy of feeding wheat screen ings when whole wheat can be bought at present prices, is doubuul. 1 here is a great deal of foul seed in screenings, a large portion of which will be scattered over the farm along with the poultry ma nure. A pc stable boiler is a handy thing to have about the premises, and almost a ne cessity for a poultry.raiser. Unmarketa ble vegetables, bones and scraps from the butcher, ana such things, can be utilised by boiling them for the poultry. Cxacxliigb or perk scraps boiled up into mush, with meal and bran, make a capital diah for the little chicks this month It is just as good for laying or fattening purposes. The odor &* Caiotma tar, applied on the cracks and Joints of hen-houses, is benefi cial to ihe health of the occupants. Crude crrboiS! acid, applied to the under aide of toe perches, is also a good thug. A Plush Stand. — Troonte three round sticks of i,the right length, for the lege; a round piece of pine hoard, or a barrel cover, for the table, and some plush of a desirable color. Out a atrip of the plush of the right length to cover the logs, and sew it with silk of the same coior, where it will be least noticed. Gather the ends together, and sew them firmly. Nail the cover to the ends of the legs, and pat a broad hoop around the cover, and nail it firmly to the cov er and to the legs. The legs tie crossed in the middle, and bound firmly with wire. A bow of bright colored ribbon is tied around the legs where they meet, to hide the joint. The top is covered with the plush drawn tight, and a lam brequin is fitted all around with braid or gimp over the seam. Out the 1am- brequiu in one piece with scallops, and pointed tabs alternately, bind them with nbbon, and bang chenille tassels to each point The lambrequin mayjoe lined with silesia or muslin. Embroid ered work may be put on the lambrequin aa well as in the centre of the cover. This makes a handsome light work ta ble. and if the top is made of a cheese box lined inside, and half the cover hinged with a lid, it will become useful and handy, as well as pretty. JuiiUNNH Soup.—Fry a chicken, a slice of pork, some* trimmings of fresh veal and two large onions; then put them on to boil with a gallon of cold water and some parsley; skim well, and when reduced to half the quantity, strain. Parboil two carrots, out them into any fancy shapes you choose. thei> toss them over the fire in a little hot batter until they begin to brown, sprink ling a little pepper, salt and sugar over them* Cat two turnips with a vegeta ble cutter, and parboil them until quite tender. Cut ten or twelve leeks aud a head of celery into rings and a head of cauliflower into flowerets. Throw the leeks, oiulitlower and oelery into separ ate vessels containing boiling water, and let boil two or three minutes; then add them to the boiling broth. Let tiie soup simmer lor halt an hour, then add the Lean of a lettuce cut into rings; when that is tender, add a tablespoou- tul of caramel, pepper aud salt to taste, the carrots, turnips, and halt a teacup- tul eaon ot green peas, and asparagus heads, boiled quite tender. Pour the soup into the tureen aud drop in a poached egg for each person at the table. Ragout or Mutton.—A ragout of oold meat is a .-, appetizing dish if oarefu'- ly prepared; in unpraot.ood hands it is usually an uninviting one. The follow- lowing recipe w 11 prove a very good preparation: Slice thinly two turnips, two carrots and two onions; melt a ta blespoonful of butter in a sauce-pan, put in the vegetables and brown them. Sprinkle in a little flour and stir the whole to prevent browning too quickly, turn them out on a hot dish until wan ted. Cut cold, roast mutton into sq uare pieces and brown them on each side in the same pan in which the vegetables were browned; then add half a pint of hot stock salt and pepper, a lit.le chopp ed parsley and thu sliced vegetables. Simmer gently until the vegetables are tender. Arr uige the vegetables in the centre of the nnih, with the meat as a border; pour the sauce over all and servo. Apple Hotter Pudding. —Gore and peel eight or ten apples, put in a dish, fill the places from vrhioh the core have been taken with sugar aud a very small piece of cinnamon-stick, cover and bake until halt done. Beat the yolks of four eggs light, add one cup of flour with oue tea*-poon of baking powder sifted with it, two tablespoons of powdered sugar, a half-pint ot milk. Stir ail well together, add Justly the whites of foui eggs beaten to a froth. Butter a bakiug dish, put m it the hall-baked apples, pour over them the prepared butter. The apples must be quiue cool before adding the butter. Bake in a well-bear ed ovtn three-quarters of an hour. Serve with a cream sauce. To Use Cold Mutton oh Beef.— Chop it flue, and put it in a saucepan with a cup of gravy or of soup stock, season with pepper and salt, and scat ter ov.r it, stirring all the time, a table- spoonful of flour; let the meat heat gradually, and, when “boiling hot,” set the pan on the back part of the stove, and poach some eggs to serve with the meat: When the eggs are done, put tbe meat on a platter, and lay the eggs around the edge. This receipt is very good without the eggs. Gold bc elsteak tastes like black-bird served in this way. Bread Souffle —Pour a quart ot boiling milk over one pound of stale bread. Let it stand until soft, then beat to a smooth pulp, add the well- beaten yolks of eight eggs, quarter of a pound of butter, quarter of a pound of sugar, grate orange peel to taste, half a pound of raisins, a pinch of salt and the well-beaten whites of eight eggs Hake. Seive with wine sauce or rich cream. But at any drug store one ounce of camphorated oil and five cents’ worth of obturate of potash, and whenever a soreness appears in the throat, put the potash in a half-tumbler of water and gsrgie the throat: then rub the neck thoroughly with tbe camphorated oil at night before going to bed, aud also pin around th 3 throat a small strip of woolen flannel. TtaSBB is nothing better for a cut than powdered rosin. Get a few cents’ worth, pound it until it is quite fine, put it in a oast-off spice box with pertorated top, then you can easily sift it on the cut. Put a soft cloth around the injured member, and wet it with water once in a while; it will prevent inflammation or soreness. Stone Cream —One quart of milk, half box ot gelatine, sugar to taste. Mix well and put on to boil, then add tbe well-beaten yolks of three eggs, and stir until it thickens. When aone, fla vor to taste with vanilla, aud put it into moulds. Roast Red-head Duck.—Thoroughly clean, stuff and sew up vent; truss it well, and season with pepper and salt. Have a hot, steady oven: put hot water in the bottom of dripping and baste tbe duck very often, Stuve with currant and wild grape jelly. Fried Sardines.—Select large sar dines, wipe off the oil, dip them in beaten egg seasoned with cayenne pep per; roll ib cracker or bread crumbs, and fry delicately in boiling olive oil or lard. Serve on hot battered toast. Potatoes Satox—Pare three large potatoes aud cut with a vegetable cutter into small balls about the sue cf a mar ble; pat them in a stewpan with two tabletpoonfnls of hot batter or olive batter and a good sprinkling of salt; shake them occasionally until they are quite brown. She inquired of three different par sons in the oorrider of the pod offioe as to whore the money-order department was, and, not feeling satisfied with this, she asked at both stamp-windows. If he finds work he won’t want it, and if he gets tired and comes home on foot he’ll be so worn oat that he can t more than half jaw around.
