A Noted Assassin Dead. — Johannes
Stauff, the German who murdered the
Countess Von Gorlitz nearly thirty-six
years ago, died recently in Chicago.
The fact of ids death has only just been
made known through-a private letter.
When Stauff murdered the Countess
he was in the employ of Count Von
Gorlitz. The Count was at a dinner
party, and returning home late found

The United States government—or
the politicians who h»vc the control of
it—seems determined to annoy and
oppress our people in every way pos
sible. Arrests of good citizens Inwe
already been made, on pretended
charges ot intimidation of voters and
violation of the laws of Congress, and
the officials seem to be extending their
field of oiierations. Chester, Marl
borough, Lancaster and other counties
arc to be invaded by a Jot of deputy
marshals, am? innocent citizens are to
be dragged before United States com
missioners on the ready oaths of rene
gades and hirelings. All the indica
tions are that o*r people are to be
passed through the same experience
they had last spring. Some of the
parties arrested will, of course, bo
bound over for trill, and wc shall have
a repetition of' tbit scenes enacted in
the United States Circuit last
April. It is not expected that any
body can be convicted. The repre
sentatives of the government do not
hojie, by any-dbvicc, so to pack the
juries Ihaf-lhey will bo composed en
tirely of partisans willing to convict
innocent men for political ends. The
object is to subject the good people of
the State to annoyance and expense,-
in the hope to deter them from making
future efforts to retain bm’ honest and
capable government. JT the good peo
ple of South Carolina would consent
to remand their government to th'c
Radicals, there would be an entire end
to those prosecutions. The whole
power of the government, all the ma
chinery of the Federal Courts, is be
ing used in an effort to -restore -the
power of a political party. The talk
about vindicating ihor majesty of the
Jaw, protecting the rigid of suffrage,
and purifying the ballot, is all stuff.
The very men who are doing this talk
have been ttfe* companions and-•co-'
workers of corruptionists, thievM'Uml
perjurers. It is folly to ray that su*h
men have any lofty moti ve in thesfr
prosecutions. They are* working for
pay and for. revenge.
As-showing the impression which
these prosecutions mcJct upon out
siders, the Columbia correspondent of
the News and'Courier writes:

through which they passed last-spring.

belonged to the Countess were found
in the possession of Stauff’s father,
and the old man and his other son
were also arrested. They were liber
ated, proven entirely guiltless, but by
the testimony, principally of Schiller
and his wife, Johannes Stauff was
found guilty in 1850, three years after
the commission of the deed. Just be
fore his conviction capital punishment
was abolished in Hesse Darmstadt,
and he was therefore sentenced to im
prisonment for life, and was incarce
rated in the Fortress of Marienschloss.
He was released in 1872 on condition
of his leaving the country. He came
to Chicago and worked as an express-

having killed the Countess by choking
her to death.

manifested his friendliness and kindly j
feeling for the poor negro, as is testi- ]
lied by one of our best colored citizens, J
who' wailed upon him then. On every 1
visit to his Alum Mater ho would
never forgot to send for this gentleman
and pour forth his good wishes for the
prosperity of the race in general. He
lias otUieatod several young men of our
race and" generously" provided for his
former slaves. Although a Democrat,
yet lie had the interest of- the colored
race at heart.- He had a grand object
lie desired’ to accomplish in the inter
est of the colored man, and we sir u'd
never let our memory fail to place him
among the foremost of our friends.
Wc will now leave him, while his
good works shaft cause his name to be
on the pinnacle of honor beside those
of America’s noblest departed -sons.—

formed the red spot. Another theory
was that the crust of the planet where
the spot appeared may have been ex
ceptionally heated, so "that the atmos
phere above it was kept free from
clouds. A third theory regarded tlw
red spot as possibly a solidified mass
thrust up through its gaseous and
liquid surroundings, and forming, per
haps, the nucleus of one of the future
continents of the giant planet.
