The siglft of his ofd Edgefield home and neighbors has a tonic effect upon 1cm. The grandeur of the federal Capital is not 1 tolbe compared .in his mind with the plainest prospect in South Carolina. The National liailway Exposition at Chicago promises to be a grand affair* The preparations for it arc being rap- idty pushed, nnd the presidetft of the board of commissioners, lion. The representatives of the Green back labor party In the Forty-seventh Congress have issued an address to the Country,in which they say: “Wo hold that the Government can issue paper money intfh.c time of peace as well as in war, and should do so if the neces sity of the people require such action. .Money issued and used to build monu ments of peace, thereby giving em ployment to labor, would produce more lasting and beneficial results than money expended in war and the de struction of property.” Georg In r.y* Her U.rft Tribute of Reupcct Over the Reniulua of her Head Governor. Mrs. L. F. Cairraa OEMEKAL GOSSIP. Charlotte Journal: One of the acts of the General Assembly, passed at this session, ought to be printed in letters of gold, and a copy sent to the National museum. It was “an act to incorporate the town of Kill Quick in the county of Edgecombe.” Whether the place gets its name from tho char acter of the climate, the mean whis key, or the belligerent tendency of the population, does not appear. It is as great a crime againtt decency for a Legislature to legalize such a .ame for a town as it would be for a Christian parent lo name bis child Judas Iscariot. The prosecution of the Democrats from this county shows the animus of the Government towards tho good pcO' plo of South Carolina. Tho effort is making to bunt up witnesses who will swear strongly enough to get up semblance of a charge against some of our citizens. The evidence published elsewhere shows how utterly the Gov ernment has failed to make out its case. What the result of fmthcr examina tion may be, cannot now be foretold. The gentlemen who have been dragged to Columbia, at great sacrifice to them selves, have the sympathy of all our people. They nr« no more criminals or law-breakers than is any other mart who sought, in a peaceful and lawful way, to perpetuate good government in South Carolina. Theif cause !s the cause of all our people. They are vicunas of tho spite of disappointed office-seekers and worthless renegades. They must suffer, if they sutler at all, as representatives of the good aud true people of Fajrfield. As such they must be sustained at every stage of the proceedings by which it is sought to make them: sufler consequences no more due to their conduct than to that of any other good citizen. — In the star-route (rial Thursday the counsel for tho government an nounced that they had no more testi mony to otler. —The Kansas House of Representa tives on Monday passed the Senate hill to prevent corners, options and gam bling, and declaring absolutely void all gambling contracts. —Noah D. Smilh, deputy surveyor of customs at Memphis, Trim., who pleaded guilty several days ago to a charge of embezzling $2,600 of gov ernment funds, lias been sentenced to two years in the penitentiary at Ches ter, Illinois. — Charles Luke, whoso mother krej s a hotel in Buffalo, N. If., poured coal oil on the floor nnd applied a match. The house was full of sleeping inmates, but the fii*n was discovered and quickly tiuguisked. Lu. e confessed the crime. —A motion was adopted in the French Chamber of Deputies Thurs day declaring that tho chamber, having confidence in the government, rejected the proposal to consider a revision of tho constitution. —The Ontario Court pf Appeals at Toronto, all tho judges concurring, affirmed the decision of the court below in tho case of Major Phillips, the fugi tive superintendent of the Philadel phia almshouse, and ordered that the prisoner be remained for extradition. —The committee of the New Jersey Legislature, which has been investigat ing the alleged attempt of cx-Speaker Egan to bribe Mr. Armitage, reported Thursday tiiat Egan’s conduct was highly reprehensible and recommend that he bo censured and denied the privileges of the floor of the House Tho report was unanimously adopted Brown’s Iron Bitters will have a better tonifc effect upon any one whd needs “ bracing up,” than any medicine made, / DIPHTHERIA HAS HO CHANCE WHEN TREATED WITH Perry Davis’s Pain Killer This wonderful remedy haa saved the fives of many, many children who Were almost dead with DIPHTHERIA. Yield, ye youtlis, ye yeoman, yield your A Bold Robbkuy.—On Friday night) the 2nd inst., while W. F. Corinick, a colored barber ofonrtown, was absent from his shop, a trunk belonging to him in which were two boxes—one containing about ten dollars in silver belonging to a church of which he is treasurer, and the other containing about twenty dollars in gold, silver and currency belonging to himself— was prized open and the contents ex tracted. The box having his private funds was carried oil’, while the other was left, but the contents of both were missing. Suspicion strongly pointed to Charles Colton, a colored barber, to whom Cormick had rented an adjoin ing shop, (and as it turns out is a regu lar jail-bird, having served two terms iu the State penitentiary.) Ho was arrested, and in default of bail, com mitted to jail by Trial Justice Aguew. Before his commitment be protested his innocence, but offered to pay the money if the ease was dropped.’ Up to this point he lias failed to do so. Subsequent to his arrest, developments showed the connection, aiding aud abetting in this crime of Sum Arling ton, a colored man, who in the past has been nnder arrest for riot created during political elections. While ef fecting his arrest Sam tried to escape through a window, but through the vigilance of our esteemed sheriff, M. T, Holley, Esq., aud his assistants, he was captured and now lies in jail« ft a Warrant issued by Trial Justice Ag- new, as- an accessory and receiver of stolen property. After the wrest of the parties named search warrants were issued, but diligent search failed so far to discover any of tho stolen property. Tite suspected parties will probably come up 1 before Trial Justice Agucw for a preliminary eXaminutioiv in a few days. Crimes- of this kind arc of rare occurrence iu Aiken coun ty, and it gives us little pleasure to record this offence, which is serious in Rs ettects to guilty parties.—Antwa Journal and lievieio.
