Tom Clyina, of Nortii Batte, cap
tured by means of a steel trap, a few'
days ago, an animal supposed to be a
marten. In some respects liie animal
iCSciiibieo a fox and is quite a curiosity.
The most singular tiling about the
quadruped, if report be true, is that
the legs on one side of its body are
several inches shorter than tlio’so ou
the other side. {Should such prove to
be the ease, the creature is uudoubted-
iy a gyascutus, an animal always ex
ceedingly rare, and which has long
been thought extinct. It is never
fbund in other than hilly regions, its
peculiar structure unfitting it for a
level country. By reason of its pecu
liar one-sided development, the gyas-
cutua is, however, adapted for living
on mountains and hills. It can w’nlk
with ease on the side of a steep slope,
wliere even a goat would have a pre
carious foothold The uninial’s strange
structure, unfortunately, is in one
respect a great disadvantage. While
it can travel around a hill from right
to iett with the utmost ease, it cannot
retrace its stops. So long as its left
side is towards the hill the creature
stands as firmly as a tree, but if it is
obliged to turn*the other way ils foot
ing U lost immediately, anil it rolls
lielplessly to the bottom of the slope.
Hunters of the gyascutus, whose fur
was jield In high esteem, used to avail
themselves of this fact to capture the
animal. It was useless to pursue a
gyascutud on its chosen path, as the
animal’s locomotive arrangements gave
it exceptional spued. The hunters,
tltercforc, adopted the artifice of trav
eling around the hill in a direction
contrary to that pursued by the ani
mal, and, meeting it face to face, had
no difficulty in securing it.

So much has been said and written
lately re'«;rding the Jewish aggression,
not oi..y in countries like Germany
and Russia,,« here regular auti-Semkic
societies and movements exist, but
here, where all the people and religions
are supposed to enjoy the same rights
and privileges, tlwt a very exaggerated
and erroneous klea 1'as become current
as to the number of the Jew s in exist
ence. We were told in a late article
in the New York Sun, for instance,
that the Jews were pouring into the
{south in such numlicfs as to threaten
to capture the coimtr). How absurd
is such talk shown when we, take into
consideration the small number of
Jews in Europe. The following sta
tistics from the book of Prof* G. F.
Kull, of.Lclpsio, shows exactly how
much we have to fcfli tVom an invasion
of Jews, and the danger that Germany
and Russia are in from them:

Ben Bur leu recently issued a fast
day proclamation, concluding as fol
lows: “And I do specially exhort the
ministers of tfic Gospel on that day to
Iced their flocks with the Divine word,
and not to discourse upon political and
other secular topics which may divert
the serious thoughts of the people from
Rumble worship of the Father.”
The factors of $t. Louis have united
to advise Southern planters of the cot
ton belt to raise food products. They
show that the present price of cotton
is fifteen per cent, below the average
of the past five years, and that corn is
thirty-three and provisions fifty per
cent, above tiie average, thus causing
the mere cottoiwraiser to lose largely
in two ways. The Southern planters
should now combine in taking this
advice.
The cotton worm is an industrious
insect. It is estimated that it annually
destroys cotton to the value of fifteen
millions of dollars. How to extermi
nate the plague confounds the inter
ested speculators. TRc aristocratic
tendencies of the worm have kept its
character and habits so obscure from
observation that no menus of fightimr
it have yet been found effective. It is
])roposed, though Brazil is the chosen
field, to make such investigations ns
will tend to an arrest of the evil in
future. ’ ' t .
The enrollment of pupils in Virginia
in 1882 was 267,272. Tiie expenditures
for the schools from tiie State fund in
1881 was $963,000. There lias already
been set apart for the schools in the
years 1883-84 the sum of $674,566.
The public school system of the State
dates from 1796. Its greatest develop
ment, however, dates from January,
1871, when gratuitous instruction, pre
viously restricted to the needy, was
extended to others, and on a much en
larged scale, at a cost for that ) car ot
$587,472 for 130,000 pupils.

[From the RochesUt Union.)
Not a few of our optimist Republi
can contemporaries arc just now amus
ing themselves and the public by print
ing elaborate tabular statements of the
probable electoral vote in 1884. Of
com so these all make out a substantial
Republican majority in the electoral
college. It is noteworthy, however,
that in order to do this they are com
pelled to place New York State in the
Republican column, in the face of the
astounding fact that the Democrats
carried it last fill by the wholly un
paralleled majority—iii round numbers
—of 193,000 votes I Our esteemed
contemporaries who do this “tabh
making” show, “ptftt all doubt”—in
their own minds, of course—that their
party will elect, the next President as
it elected the last and present. But

Pleasant, but Unsatisfactouv.—
On ■Wednesday evening, the 21st iust.,
Judge Haskell, the new president of
the Columbia $c Greenville Railroad,
telegraphed several gentlemen in An
derson that he would pass through the
city on a business trip, and would be
pleased to, sec them at the depot, in
response to which a large number of
the citizens and merchants of Ander
son repaired to the depot at the ap
pointed time. Judge Haskell arrived
some fifteen ihniuAcabetorc the passen

presence of the crowd, stepped upon
the platform of las car, and* after an
introduction from General Humphreys,
made a short address, acknowledging
the courtesy of tha. visij, and saying
that he hoped as soon as. the business
of the road would permit to give our

The three C’s—California, Colorado
and Connecticut— should perhaps have
been classed as doubtful, for the Dem
ocrats are as likely to carry them next
tear ns the Republicans are. Add
them to the Democratic column, and
we can carry the country and lo.-c New
York, a feat which is impossible lor
our opp^ ients to accomplish. An
analysis of the above table further
shows that the Republicans cannot
succeed, even though they carry New
York, should they lose California, Col
orado, Connecticut and New Hamp
shire—four States which they are quite
likely to lack when they come to make
up {lueir count after the next Presi
dential election. General Garfield, in
1880, had a majority of but thirty-two T: ** eui 'y >
in the electoral college. Without New
Yprk lie would have been beaten
then. That year Dorsey’s “soap” car
ried both Imhnna and New York for
the Republican party. It is quite pro
bable that saponaceous material will
be wanting in 1884, the Star-route
gentry having no more routes to con
quer; therefore, if om: Republican
friends can squeeze nnv comfort out of
tiie above table, they are entirely wel
come to it. Still, we are free to admit,
much depends upon the nominees of
the two parties, and then again, all
signs fail in certain exigencies, giving
force to tiie aphorism that “nothing
happens but tiie unexpected.”
