since the votes on the tariff'in Congress
have been recorded people will begin
to conclude that it is a local issue.
The Scientific American says there
is a fine opening for inventive genius
in contriving a snake trap to be used
in India, where snakes annually kill
thousands of people and cattle. The
religious notions of the people won’t
allow them to take life and hence the
snakes multiply rapidly. What is
wanted is a snake trap that will catch
and do the killing or hold the snake
until some one without conscientious
scruples in this respect can do the dis
patching.
Hon. Hugh J. Jewett is already
being boomed by some Democratic
papers in Ohio as tho Democratic can
didate for President in 1884. In 1874
Mr. Jewett made a contract with the
Eric railroad by which he bound him
self to be its president for ten years at
$40,000 a year salary, receiving $150,
000 cash in advance. This expires in
iso*, ana it is intimated that Mr.
Jewett does not care to continue in the
railroad presidency, preferring to take
his chances for stepping np higher.
According to the newspapers of Rio
Janeiro, on the eleventh anniversary
of the passing of the law of emancipa
tion in 1871, the effect of that measure
lias been singularly beneficial to the
material and moral development of the
country. In those years more than
00,000 slaves have been spontaneously
freed by their masters without com-
pcnsalion, while the Slate has given
liberty to more than 11,000. During
the same period 280,000 children of
slaves have been born free, and the
cost to the State of emancipation up to
tho present time has been* nearly
$4,000,000.
It is estimated that there are two
hundred thousand vagabonds and beg
gars in the German Empire, including
thieves, pickpockets and other swin
dlers, and the authorities estimate the
animal loss to honest people by their
operations at the enormous sum of
$25,000,000. Many of these evil-doers
are brought before tho magistrates
from time to time, but both judges and
jurors at e accused of administering too
mildly even tho mild Ihws of'Gernmny
against vagabondage. The evil has
become so great that tho government
is understood to-be preparing a severe
law for bringing scoundrels of the
vagabond class to justice.
Americans are becoming quite re-
nnrkublu for their lavish use of flowers
at dinners and banquets. Upon this
subject the New York Commercial
Advertiser says:, “For a dinner for
eighteen, gentlemen, on Thursday, a
florist made a oentro-basket remarkable
for its size and display of selected
flowers. It was six feet ih diameter.
There were one thousand rich roses,
and a garden of lilacs, violets and oth
er spring blossoms. Tho centre of this
piece was a circle of lilies—amaryllis,,
vitata and callas. The coaUmots were
of hyacinth sprays and roses. The
same night a dinner for one hundred
and twenty-five at Dclmoiiico’4 was
neeorated with rose baskets fringed
■with ferns.”
The Observations of a Traveler-Cotton in
I.arge Quantities at the Different Depots—
The Outlook In General.
[From the Charlotte Observer.]
Chester, S. C-, February 24,—All
along most of the railroad lines in the
South one cannot help noticing the
various improvements that have been
made, and others that arc/tni in pro
gress; specially is this tho case along
tlw track of the Charlotte, Columbia &
Augusta Road. •Sherman’s mile
posts,” as the chimneys of those burnt
houses which his army destroyed arc
facetiously called, have all disappeared
and have 'teen used for other and new
dwellings. What was formerly -known
as Morrow’s Turnout, with biit one or
two buildings, is now better known os
Pineville, N. C., and it is a considera
ble town, with some dozen or more
stores in it, some of them large and
handsome, also several churches and a
number of fine residences. Rock Hill,
S. C., is now the rival of its county
seat, Yorkvillo. It has a large trade,
its stores have more tho nppear-
of a town,
and its hotels might well be imitated
by such towns as Wadcsboro, Rock
ingham and some others in this is-latc,
to their advantage.
Cotton is piled np on every available
space ot the platforms of the various
dejKits. There has been entirely too
much of this Southern staple prociuced
during tho past year. A particular
friend of mine, who lias been a cotton
broker all his life, and until recently a
resident of New York, and iu the cot
ton business there, informed me that
the total number of bales of last year’s
production will exceed 7,000,000,
which is somewhat in excess of the
demand, and must assuredly reduce
the price still lower than it ranges at
this time. It will probably reach its
lowest figures some time during the
summer months. If this be true, then
the bulls of the New York and Liver
pool cotton exchanges will certainly
have a lively time of it. But it is
furthermore stated by this gentleman
that nearly all the cotton along the
coast, and in the more Southern States,
has been shipped, and 1ms reached the
markets by this time, which may be
of advantage to tlie upcountry cotton
buyers and holders.
Our Southern merchants generally
have perhaps made a mistake in pur
chasing too heavilv of a fall and winter
and E. W. Aiken appeared &t bis side
' th*r »a«fi the latter accompanied the
dying man to Charlotte.
Dr. Ediutnids left the train Ches
ter. All was done that inedHiifl skill
could do; for it was the-miwnimous
opinion of Dr. Aiken End the Char
lotte physicians tbat it was a fatal
stroke of apoplexy, and was fceyond
the skill of any physician.
On reaching Charlotte the corpse
was can-ied to the undertaker’s, placed
in a casket, and sent t>y express to
Winston Monday vnoVnuig.
Judge Cloud was bom in Ftokes

commenco as early as was expected,
neither lias it been so severe, amt hence
our farmers have made but modcruto
purchases, which they were almost
obliged to do owing to the hard years
of 1881 to 1882, thus saving something
to pay for their purchases ot sojHrlic*
at Unit time, in addition to all this,
the weatlier has generally been so bail
that farmers and planters could not
well lea\ r e home, which lias again cur
tailed trade considerably. While all
this may he a benefit to the agricul
turist it does injury to our mercantile
friends,and will probably compel them
to make bat light purchases iu tho
spring.
From Chester, 8. C., southward the
peach trees are in full bloom—a matter
of great surprise to tourists from tho
North to Florida, but to us Southern
ers it is an indication of an early
spring; and yet owing to the eonrhnr-
alerdns verv tilths plowing has been
done up this time. The growing
wheat generally looks well—better
than was perhaps expected, much of it
having been put into the ground late
and among the cotton stalks still
standing. The ground was not pre
pared betbrehand by plowing, but the
grain drill with fertilisers was all that
used. This is a new way of farming
and saves labor, but whether it will
produce as well as the old method re
mains to he seen. o. B. d.
