It is reported that Senator Hampton
will soon resign Ms scat in the Senate.
If it be true, it is high time that candi
dates ure making themselves known to
the ‘'dear people.” Wo have a nomi
nation to make for the position in ques
tion, but we deem it out of order until
it is known definitely what the Senator
really expects to do.
Undkii the constitution of Connec
ticut the Legislature has almost su
preme power and can exercise judicial
functions at will. We think this rather
too radical even for this progressive
age. On ths other hand, the same
State still clings to the old and crnel
custom of imprisoning for debt. We
think a happy medium between the
extremes would be belter for the State.
The case of the State vs. Major U.
B. Whites, the defaulting treasurer of
Newberry county, was tried a few days
ago before Judge Witherspoon of the
sixth circuit. Messrs. Pope & Schum-
pert appeared for the defence and So
licitor Dnncah for the State. Tho case
was magnificently fought on both
sides, and resulted in a mistrial—nine
of the jury being in favor of convic
tion and three for acquittal. The de
fence harped a great deal upon the
war record of the defendant and his
sound Democratic record. In his
charge to the jury, Judge Witherspoon
very properly said: ‘‘I deem it un
duly to say to yon, gentlemen, that all
this talk about services of the
prisoner has nofffllg to do with this
case. You iu-c to be governed by the
law and th^tofdence. Sad will it be
for the State when outside influences
are allowed to come into court and
interfere with the administration of
justice.”
A Neat Little Game.—It is not
often that any of our business men arc
swindled or deceived by the sharpers
and parasites who secure a living by
preying upon the purses of credulous
citizens; but at times, some new
scheme for swindling is adopted by
traveling sharks and our citizens find
their money gone with no value re
ceived in lieu thereof. About three
weeks ago an individual called upon a
number of merchants and others, rep
resenting himself as an agent for a
rubber stamp firm in New Oilcans.
His plan was to induce a victim to
give an order for rubber stamps, which
the alleged agent was to have shipped
from New Orleans as soon as they
could be made. The supposed agent
said that the stamps would certainly
be sent within a week from the date dt
the order. The purchasers were asked
to pay in advance, which they did in
almost every instance. The so-called
agent lias never been heard from, and
no stamps have arrived, although this
was nearly a mouth ago. The firm
which he claimed to represent was
written to two weeks since, but no
reply has been received. The existence
of such a firm is tliercforo exceedingly
doubtful. Greenville has been com
paratively free from the operations of
the roving adventurers and swindlers
who make their living bv defrauding
communities. Our people should be
more careful in future.—(JreenviUe

PROPOSAL
Ff.nces and Dogs.—The Legislature
elected in 1880 was composed of bmvc
men. In face of the outspoken oppo
sition of many true Democrats the
Stock law was enacted because its ad
vocates believed that, it was best for
the whole country and that experience
would speedily convince its opponents
of their mistake. At the election of
1882 a very large majority ef the Stock
Jaw men were defeated for rc-clcction
and, in many cases, inferior men elect
ed in their places. The very fact that
no change, worthy of tho name, was
made by their, successors is the best
evidence that the law is becoming pop
ular. Now we suggest that the present
Legislature, at its next session, achieve
a reputation for itself by bold legisla
tion on the dog question. Let us get
rid of all members of tho canine popu
lation except those that are honest
homo guards or members, in good
standing, of respectable hunting packs.
The tramp dog should be exterminated
and the man who starts the war will
be a public benefactor.—Ham weft
Ttople.
—Hon. James G. Blaine is stated by
several Washington correspondents to<
have received tho news of Senator
Windom’s defeat for re-election with
lunch satisfaction, despite "the fact that
they hod been -colleagues in tho Gar
field administration. It js said that
three years ago Mr. ConklHig com
pletely turned Mr. Windom’s head by
suggesting him as being in the category
of presidential candidates. Mr. Win-
dom took the hint, and had a solid
delegation in ids lavor sent from Min
nesota to the Republican National
Convention. But for this Mr. Blaine
would have received the Minnesota
vote, and in all probability the nomi
nation. For this Mr. Blaine is said to
enjoy Mr. Winddm’s recent defeat
hugely.
