HHT THIRTY DAYS
The anti-monopolists of the West
are taking steps towards the formation
of a new party. A conference will be
held in Chicago on the Fonrth of July
aiext, on the basis of four representa
tives from each Congressional district,
four from each territory and four from
the District of Columbia. Antagonism
to monopolies will doubtless be the
principal plank in its platform.
Senator Lamar delivered a mag
nificent speech In the Senate a few
days ago on the tariff. The following
is Ids eloquent peroration: “I, sir,” he
added impressively, “have seen some
thing of tills in my own experience. I
saw a great institution N which was
more firmly entrenched In statutes and
organic law than the manufacturers
are in this tariff law become an ob
ject of popular uprising. I was among
those, sir, who shared in the attempt
to resist it, and I saw that institution
go down with all its vast capital, with
all the political privileges which it
conferred, with all the constitutional
rights by which it was guaranteed—go
down beneath the irreversible fiat of
the American people. Sir, I waru the
manufacturers of this country. The
handwriting is upon the wall of this
protective system, and I trust they
will have the intelligence to decipher
its import.”
A Wonder at Hodges.—On the
13th inst , there will be on exhibition
a genuine living curiosity. It is a
healthy child with four legs and four
arms. Many persons in Abbeville
have seen this freak of nature and of
one accord they pronounce it the
greatest wonder of the Age. There is
no deceit or humbug about it, ami if
any one is anxious to see a regular
sport of nature they can be gratified in
the fullest sense of the worn. Wo can
endorse it as a genuine curiosity amt

not deceive the public.—Medium.

Judge Wallace’s eloquent charge
to the grand jury recently at Abbe
ville C. H.,on the subject of lynching
is one of the encouraging signs of the
times, and should be the occasion of
congratulation in every section of the
State. He said: “Lynching is an act
of violence outside the limits of law.
Wc live under a government of law,
and for centuries there has been one
continual struggle to eliminate the
linmnn will from governmental func
tions. In free governments wo ad
minister, or should administer, the law
iminfiucnced and uncontrolled by pas
sion or prejudice. In regard to this
lynching, take such steps as you think
proper. If you find out the parties,
present them in your presentment to
the court, with the witnesses to prove
the facts.” We hope the grand jary
at Abbeville will not ignore sueh time
ly and thoughtful advice, Abbeville
should sco to it tlmt the offenders are
ferreted out and speedily brought to
trial. South Carolina is at least able
to punish cotton thieves, and such con
duct, under the circumstances, v* a
stain upon the civilieation of the State,
and a wanton insult to the ability aud
dignity of the government.

Vigorous efforts have Been made of
bte in Congress to relieve cotton tics
from the burdensome opei-ations of the
protective tariff,, and failing hi. this, to
reduce the duty on it.
So far all efforts in that direction
have failed, aud the toiling millions of
honest cotton planters throughout the
South are compelled by the imperial
edict of our National Legislature to
contribute their quota toward the sup
port of a small, contemptible herd of
pampered manufacturers at the North.

Don’t Know Their Income.—Dr.
Thomas W. Evans, formerly dentist to
Louis Napoleon arrested a confidential
employ6 for embezzlement. Before
the court Dr. Evans admitted that over
a million francs had been abstracted
from his banking account without his
personal knowledge. The robbin,
might have gone on for years, accord
ing to hie confession, without, any one
knowing anything about it, so large is
his income. This recalls the case of
Jay Gould, who on a witness stand in
New York, confessed he could not
recall whether a certain check he drew
was for $5,000,000 or $7,000,000. It is
doubtless true that many people go
through life with a very dim idea ot
there annual expenses, or how much
they arc really worth. It is said that
neither Gould nor Vanderbilt can teli
within $15,000,000 the amount their
property would'briug if converted into
cash.—DetworeAf’# Monthly.
