A Paris correspondent writes to tl>c
St. Jaynes Gazette: ‘‘The chid' secret
of Gaiiibellu's power as an orator was
that lie allowed his emotions to cany
him along- with them, as seemingly
helpless as a loaf in the tempest. He
employed none of tho«e tricks of ora
tory, none of those studied gestures
which arc the stage carpentry of the
tribune, the sheet anchor of mediocrity.

It rs said that Clark Mills, the ‘Wash

that city, drove an ox-cart nine months | was the language of passion; it was
in Charleston, when he was only fifteen
years old, for five dollars a month.
The Supreme Court of the United
States has decided that the State laws
prohibiting the inlcrmarricgo of the
races (ire not unconstitutional. The
decision of the Court is sound in prin
ciple and in entire harmony with the
letter and spirit of the constitution.
It is reported that the lion. James
G. llluiuc will, during the spring of
this year, make a tour through th
South. Wc will he glad to have him
do so. ITc may learn something of the
character of our people, a subject of
which he has more than once shown
himsoif to be lamentably ignorant.
The Times 1 Paris correspondent says
the result of the situation in France is
tolerably clear, namely the early disso
lution of the Chamber. In a conversa
tion, for which the correspondent
vouches, President Gr6vy remarkedt
‘T am tjhrmly resolved on dissolution,
nobody can govern the country with
the present Chamber of Deputies.
The following strange story is told
l»v a writer from Vicksburg: Early
this morning a metal coffin was found
lloating in the river at Delta Point, op
posite this city. It contained the body
of a young lady, handsomely dressed,
in a white rep silk dress, with a rich
lace collar around the neck. The
dress and collar were as white and per
fect as when first buried. The face
was much discolored. The coffin was
of the old style, in use some twenty
years ago, heavily enamelled in white.
It is thought the body must have been
buried fully fifteen or i wetcty years,
and had fallen into the river at Lake
Providence, where the cemetery is
caving into the river.

The United States Supremo Court
has recently decided that State laws

and convulsed by the storm within
him that the jeers of enemies were
silenced and men who detested his
principles grew pale with excitement
and surrendered themselves for the
time being to the magic of his in flu
cnee. I was in the Chamber of Depu
ties when Gambetta delivered one of
his last great speeches. Lie walked up
the steps of the tribune listlessly; his
face was unusually flushed; he seemed
oppressed by the summer’s heat, and
doubtful of himself. He commenced
speaking slowly, almost hesitatingly,
and in such a low voice that every
head was bent forward to natch his
words. There was no mighty swing
of the axe against the tree he wished
to^fell, but a dilatory chipping of the
bark that was positively irritating to
those who expected to sec the giant
rush at once to ids task. Presently
some murmurs arose in the House, aomo
scoffing from the reactionary side
Gumbctta’s nostrils dilated, the red
hue of his face changed to pale olive,
his fingers clutched the rostrum ncr
vonsly, and his voice at each successive
period rose to a higher tone. Fresh
interrnptions came, in which the orator
perhaps caught some bitter personal
allusion. Then ho began to pace the
tribune like a caged lion. Ilis massive
head was thrown hack, and his eye

The editor of the Rising Town (Ga.)
Gazette gives his idea of early mar
riages as follows:
“Nine-tenths of tlie unhappy mar
riages that occur are the result of green
human calves being allowed to run at
large in the society pastures without
any yokes on them. They marry and
have children before they do mous
taches; they are fathers of twins be
fore they are the proprietors ol two
pair of pants, and the little girls they
marry are old women before they are
twenty rears old. Occasionally, if :
one of these gosling marriages turns
out all right, it is a clear case of luck.
If there was a law against young
galoots sparking and marrying before '
they cut all of ilieir teeth wc suppose
the little cusses would evade it in some ;
way; but there ought to be a scnti-l
inent against it. It is time enough for !

enough to buy a bundle of lathes to

We would not be understood, how
ever, as meaning that jurors should
not bo required to possess certain
qualifications before they should be al
lowed to fill the responsible position
in question. On the contrary wc main
tain that it is the dut y of the State to
exact of them qualifications of a higher
order (.von than that of Ihc voter. This
is self-evident if we consider for a
moment Lie powers and duties of
jurors, and the fearful consequences
that inevitably follow’ from a misuse
of those powers through ignorance or
otherwise. As the representatives of
their country, as the custodians of the
law, it is their sworn duty to protect the
innocent and punish the guilty. As
the arbiters of life, liberty and prop
erty, not only are the peace and social
order of the State at their mercy, but
the property rights of every citizen, to
a great extent, arc dependent upon
their fidelity, intelligence and good
sense. That wo have suffered and arc
suffering to-day both on the civil and
the criminal side of our courts from
their ignorance and incompetence, is
ns clear as the noon-day sun; and al
most every litigant in our . courts of
justice, to say nothing of the experi-
rnice and observation of the bencli and
bar, would bear ample testimony to the
truthof the assertion. The question
merits the attention and consideration
of thoughtful men in every section of
the State.
