been thrown, and from the intestines of
these worms he obtained the means of re
producing the disease in its most virulent
form by inoculation. ''He showed that
the worms by casting out over the surface
earth containing the bacteria germs were
the ca u ae for their presence upon the veg
etation which grew upon the spot, and
that animals which ate of this vegetation
were as certainly lulled by the germs which
they swallowed as were those which re
ceived tho same germs through the prick
of the inoculator’s needle.”
How if one disease may oe communica
ted in this way why may not others? The
result of these investigations, it seems to
me, is of great practical importance. From
it we may learn that all animals dying of
infectious diseases, cr indeed of diseases
not well underatosd, should be buried in
places not accessible to healthy cattle, or
where the vegetation growing on the
graves cannot be eaten by stock. Farmers
not infrequently are very jareleta m this
regard, burying cattle dying of disease in
such places as ere moat oonven’ent, and
allow mg stock to range and feed over the
graves, 1 have no doubt that many far
mers m their experience can now trace the
deaths of cattle to this scarce.

the roots require, it will in time run to be

Aqkiculttre occupies nearly half the
population of this countrr. No other in
dustry compaics with it in extent of ope
rations, capital invested, rapidity of de
velopment or increment to the national
wealth. This industry teeds 50,(MX*,000
people at home, besides contributing fully
four-fifths of the annual exports, it averts
i amines in the Old World, pays off our
national debt, stimulates ail other indus
tries and gives prosperity to every com
munity. Yet, with all this wealth and
power and industry, the farming classes
exercise less influence in legislation than
any other class.
In a clinical lecture lately
at the Pennsylvania Hospital
artificial feeding of infants, Dr. Arthur
V. Meigs described a food which he has
devised and will. <vni h, he says, he has
met with good success in many cases of
defeotive nutrition. It contains the
same elements as are found in human
milk and in more nearly the same pro
portions than any other food heretofore
recommended. This consists of two
parts of cream, one of milk, two of lime
water and three parts of a solution of
milk sugar of the strength of 17|
drachms to the pint of water. The
milk to be used should be good ordinary
cow’s milk, and not the very rich milk
of Jersey or other high-bred stock, and
the cream in the same way should be
such as is usually sold in cities, and not
too rich, containing about 16 or 17 per
cent, of fat. The quantity of. this food
taken by a new-born infant should be
two or three fluid ounces every two
hours, and if it thrives it will soon take
as much as a gill every two hours.
The beat way to prepare and use this
food is to order five or six packages of
milk sugar, containing 17} draems each;
the contents of one of these to be dis
solved in a pint of water, and each time
the child is to be fed let these be mixed
together and then warmed three table
spoonfuls of the sugar solution, two of
lime water, two of cream and one of
milk. This makes about a gill, and as
much of it as the child does not take
shouid.be thrown out and a fresh mix
ture made for the next feeding. ‘ The
eolation of sugar should be kept in a
cool place and at ouoe thrown away if it
sours, as occurs if kept more than a day
or two in warm weather. The dry su
gar keeps indefinitely and is easily
dissolved in warm water. A pint bottle
should be kept for the purpose of con
taining the solution, to serve also as a
measure of the quantity of water to be
used with each package dissolved and
also to save further measuring.

Out of a great many experiments which
I have made, 1 have never known the ad
dition of nitrogen to a fertilizer to increase
the crop so much as it increased the cost,
with possibly one cwption, on potatoes,
and that may possibly have been owing to
some other cause. Last season I had
about forty experimental plots m corn, po
tatoes and cucumbers, including Prof. At
water’s special nitrogen set, on corn, which
. g 1 am repeating with potatoes on the same
addition of nitrogenous substances increase
the crop enough to pay for their addition
al cost.
The only beet-sugar manufactory that is
now ui successful operation in the United
Hlates is he Alvaredo factory in Califor
nia, which has now been doing a paying
business for three years, and shows no
signs of giving out. During the season
ending in May, it made 1.891,688 pounds
of refined sugar, and 24,167 pounds of
crude besides 111,775 gallons of molasses,
from 11,280 tons of beets. The average
cost of the beets to the factory was $2 23
per ton, and the growers were satisfied
with the price.
Dresbino the Boys.—It is a problem
with some mothers how to dress the
hoys warm enough without making their
clothing burdensome to them. All chil
dren now are supposed to wear knit
wrappers and drawers; then long stock
ings, of the heavier grades of yarn, and
thick shoes clothe the lower limbs.
For boys from 5 to 8 or 9 it is a good
plan to utilize their outgrown blouses
of flannel. Rip out the pleats and make
plain shirt waists; at the side seams the
buttons which hold their stocking sup
porters can be securely fastened. Ad
ditional buttons cau be put on at the
pack and front and the knit drawers be
buttoned to his waist. With a coat of
ordinary thickness, closed to the throat,
the chest will bo sufficiently promoted.

In commenting upon the fact that up
ward of $8,000,W)0 worth of cotton-seed
meal is annually imported into Great Brit-
ian to feed cattle, English agricultural au
thorities style it tile very beet food impor
ted, admitting that only by its use can En
glish grazers compete with the Americana
it might be profitable for our cattle raisers
to take this hint and feed proper rations
of cotton seed meal.
A washing fluid which, it is said, will
not rot or irjure clothes in any way, is
made of one pound of potash, one ounce
of salts of ammonia and one ounce of
salts of tartar; dissolve the potash in
three-fourths of a gallon of water and
let it come to a boil; then add the salts
of ammonia. Put in a jug and then
add the salts of tartar, and cork the jag,
A half teacu; ful should be used for the
first boiler of clothes, and for the second
boiler add just a little more.
The only natural hair renewer is Garbo-
hue, a deodorized extract of pretroieum,
prepared without distillation or rectifica
tion with acids or alkalies, containing no
mineral or other poisons, delightfully per
fumed and as clear and pure as spring
water.
In keeping sheep over winter they will
do very well on coarse hay and straw, pro
vided they are given a feeding of oats and
corn at least once a day. The ewes that
are expected to give the early lambs should
be liberally fed, while those coming later
on should be separated and treated in the
same manner later in the season. What
is desired in a good ewe is plenty of milk
lor the lamb.
There is no doubt whatever that as the
world grows older, the varieties of animals
diminish in numbers, those of the larger
bize being gradually exterminated, such
for instance as the elephant, hippopotamus
and rhinocerus. Not one of the sixteen
species of horses fsund in the geological
deposits of this continent, when white
men flrsi settled here, is now in existence.
Little boy has been swearing, and
mamma, to punish him, washed thor
oughly the inside of his mouth with
soapsuds, “to,” as she explains to him,
'clean away the naughty words.” A
few days later, while passing the bath
room, she sees the youngster with his
face a mass of suds and his mouth so
full that she barely understands his
spluttering exclamations: “Getting
them all out, mamma! Swore five times
yesterday 1”

Harness should never be kept in the
Hahles which are not entirely free of ma
nure. The ammonia thus produced is
rapidly absorbed by the leather, and the
result is said to be tbe same as if it was
saturated with strong lye. It has the ef
fect of rotting the leather and harness thus
exposed, and will consequently remain
sound a comparatively brief time.
The frequent mysterious burning of
hay-ricks and barns is believed m many
instances to be due to wasp’s nests, which
are ignited by spontaneous combustion.
The chemical action produced by heat on
the wax causes it to ignite with the papery
formation with which it is iurrounded.and
the hay or dry shingles of a barn could
thus readily use the.
Home-made Crackers. These are
more wholesome for children than cook
ies, and tbe novelty of having them
made at home goes a good way toward
making them eatable. Take threc-
fourths of a cup of butter or lard, one
pint of soar milk, three teaspoonfals of
baking powder. Stir all except the
milk in with the flour, and when thor
oughly mixed pat the milk in. Be
c&refnl not to knead them too much,
us there is danger of their being tough;
roll thin and bake in a quick oven.
Pickled Limes —Make a brine strong
enough to float an egg; stick your limes
on two sides with a silver fork; then
pnt them in the brine with a weight on
the limes to keep them well under the
bnne; let them stand in a warm place
for a week; they are then fit to eat

brine.

In washing scarlet flannel, to prevent

wash in three or four waters, and care
must be taken to have them all of the
same temperature.
Stained wood work is improved by
washing it with tea leaves that have
been kept for a few days. Drain them
and pour on enough clean water to cov
er them, and place on the stove and let
thorn boil gently for about twenty min
utes. When nearly cold dip a flannel
doth in the water and wipe the paint,
drying with another lannel.
To render cotton goods uninflamma
ble, add to the starch size fifteen parts
borax for every thousand parts size.
Many persons may be cleaned, es well
ae windows, by using whiting and wa
ter.

To Remove a Tapeworm.—Steep two
ounces of pomegranate bark in a quart
of water, till there is only a pint of the
liquid. Eat no sapper; and before re
tiring for the night take a good dose of
physic. Next morning after the salts
have served their purpose (sometimes a
second dose of the salts may be needed
to produce a movement), drink half of
the pomegranate tea and half an hour
later dnnk the other half. If a cure is
not aflected in five or six hours, take a
good dose of castor oil, and the worm
will paw away.
