^^Demoresfe Monthly Magazine. The
faunas - namber is replete with
fc^gfbr die season, wen
the shorter stories are well worth
' j reading. All "the Christmas articles
'! are unusually good, including Jennie
j June's "Christmas Sermon" in her
"Talks with Women." 'I lift arncie on
"Home Art and Home Comfort" will
give the ladies some good hints, and
j "Current Topics" are. as usual, full of
I interest. "The Kitchen" has not been
forgotten, and the "Fashions*'are carefully
attended to. Among the poems
is "A Christmas Dream," by Margaret
Sangster, beautifully illustrated. The
art department embraces a charming
oil picture of a German lady of the
sixteenth century, two fine steel engravings,
and a great variety of other
| illustrations. On the whole, the
Christmas number of DemoresCs
Monthly Magazine is a decided success,
and cannot fail to give pleasure

?Miss C. J. Shelton has perhaps

?It is reported that Dr. Clayton,

section, is preparing1 to remove to
Atlanta, Ga., to engage in the apothecary
business.
?But little cotton remains in the
fields. The yield is estimated at 110
per cent, of an average. More attention
is being given to winter grain and
hog raising. Cattle are fewer in number
than usual, but 111 better condition.
?On Tuesday, the 26th inst., there
i is to be in the Beaver Creek church,
under the auspices of Mrs. D. P.
Crosby, a "Christmas-tree," primarily
intended to benefit the Sunday-School,
1 secondarily for the of the

?The Crosby Military Institute will
close with a three days' public examination

four bales of cotton, some corn, fodder

man. #TLis colored family is now canj
vassipg the surrounding country for

! have been accidental?the result of
| gambling. The same night a negro
' was badlv cnt.
j ?The colored teachers. Jas. J.
! Trapp, of Hessian Hill, and J. P.
Cohen, of Hope Station, say their
schools are now more flourishing than
earlier in the autumn. The latter reports
an enrolment of 111. The J. D.
j Hill school near Shclton has had an
irregular session. All seem laboring
zealously, believing that the right of
franchise has imposed certain grave
responsibilities that demand an education.
?South Carolina ranks second in the
Union in illiteracy?ouc-flfth of tlie
whites and four-tifths of the colored
being uuable to write. In raising the
State from this unenviable position,
the Corner, it is hoped, will do its full
nronortion. The bill, recentlv favora
bJv reported upon iu Congress, to appropriate
ten millions of dollars per
annum for the next five years, to aid
the States and Territories educationally
iu the ratio of their illiteracy, will
certainly yield the State very material
and much needed aid.
