FAIRFIELD COUNTY NEWS 4 TOLD BY CORRESPONDENTS (Continued from first page) were the principal speakers, and short and interesting talks were mad-, by T. J .,Perry, A. P. Irby, J. Pope Brooks. H. A. Gibson. Dr. Estes and W W. Ligon; :also by several ladies. This scribe tried to tell a joke at the last and fell down on it as usual, no one laughed and your humble servant felt like a fool at a frolic. If parents, pupils an1 teachers will cooperate, which ':eemeda io be the principal theme of discussion, there is no reason why Bethel school should not be the banner school of the county, with such teachers as Mrs. Sharp, Mrs. Mann and Miss Montgomery, it cannot be otherwise. The recent rise in the price of cot ton has caused more smiles and good feeling than anything that has oc curred since the armistice was sign ed. On every hand you can hear expressions like these: "Providence has saved us." In prosperity it is an easy matter to believe that an unseen hand rules over the affairs of -men, but whencotton was selling for 10 cents the pound and the present crop ahlst a failure, with debts to be paid that were made on a basis of forty-cent cotton, providence did not come in for much pi'aise and tanksgiving. I believe that the condition report for this county is still too high. I am sure that twenty-eight would not be too low for this community. Mrs. Phenia Smith and daughter have moved to Columbia to live, and we have lost two of our best and life-long neighbors. , The Rev. M. Sharp will soon finish his third conference year on the Fairfield charge, and I, for one. would be glad to have hime one more year-but no longer.
