Good Nwith Carolina Poetry.
Whenever we are in doubt as
to the best brand of poetry
and of "licker"-we always turn
to North Carolina. There was -a
time when we did not have to go
beyong the borders of our own
State for poetry-and even now
we have here in South Carolina
at least one poet who is as good
as the best of North Carolina's,
but unfortunately his muse is
not as hard-working as we would
wish, and consequently we dc
not get the results that we desire.
We mention no names but WE
leave his identity to the intelli
gent discernment and gratefu
memory of the public.
In the meantime we must oi
necessity depend upon North
Carolina for our daily poetry anc
we are p:cking up some prett3
good things. The Charlotte Ob
server is full of good poetry al
most eve--yday, and we scan its
editorial page with unrestrained
eagerness. We were lately es
pecially pleased with a poem en
titled, "I Do."-so pleased ir
fact that we are tempted to givE
it to our readers. Here is thE
first verse:
It is natural for me to like you,
And I do
And I don't want to love you.
But I do
I have tried hard to hide it,
But I ne,er can divide it,
For I do my own dear one
Love yDu.
Now,. that is not so bad-wE
have seen much worse. - And
yet the second verse, we believe.
.is better:
I wish I did not love you,
But I do
And I would not say it
But to you;
But from the first time I saw you
until now
I could not make a change,
For I don't know how.
This has at least the advant
age of candor, The poet admits
that he does not care paticularly
about loving, but simply has tc
love anyhow. "I wish I did not
love you, but I do," etc. HE
can not help his temperament.
But there is no hard feeling of
any sort. The poet is perfectly
willing to be a brother to her.
He is willing to be kind to her
and to do anything for her that
he can. Listen to his little lay.
If you ever want a favor,
Simply tell me what it is,
And I'll refuse very quickly
Or answer why it is.
This is not entirely clear, but
we suspect that it is sarcastic;
we do not believe that the poet
really means that he would re
fuse the lady a favor. We
believe, in fact, that he is very
fond of the lady and would do
almost anything for her. This
is proved conclusively by the
last verse:
Now I trust I have won your
favor,
I'm waiting to hear from you,
If you will but squeeze my hand
a little,
At present that will do.
Modesty and poetry are in
separab)ly connected, and in this
case the modesty of the poet is
proof of his prowess. All he
wishes is a little sqeeze of the
hand. A more exacting poet
would have demanded at least a
kiss or a hug-this bard is con
tent witn a hand-squeeze. "At
present, that will do." How
hauntingly suggestive is the
phrase, 'at present."
We admire the nerve as well
as the reserve of the North Caro
lina poets. They . not only say
and sing exquisite things, but
fron1 their verse we feel sure
they have not said or sung the
best things.
