M. Lucus- of Dupont, Ga., is on a visit to Mr. W. A. Hood. -Mrs. Jno. S. Cathcart is on a visit to relatives in Spartanburg county. -Miss Lizzie Harlee of Flor ence is visiting at Mrs. Lou Mc Master's. -Mrs. Addie Williford is spen ding several days in Columbia with relatives. -Rev. J. R. McAlpine and family of Pineville, N. C. are with relatives iu town. -Mr. Louis Bye has accepted a position with Pletcher & Mc-' Cormick of Columbia. -Messrs C. W. McCants and Jesse Doty attended the ball in Rock Hill Thursday evening. -Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Melli champ are spending a while with his daughter, Mrs. Jno. H. Me maste. -Mrs. D. D. Gaillard has re turned to her home in Washing ton after a short visit to relatives in town. -The pension money is now in the hands of Clerk of Court Lyles and parties interested are requested to call. Messrs A. G. Fewell of Black stock and J. E. Fulp of Fort Mill spent Saturday in town with Mr. J. H. Thornwell, Jr. -Mrs. W. 0. Brice has re turned from Summerville, where she went to see Dr. Brice, who is now greatly improved. -At the election hold Monday J. Frank Fooshe was reelected trustee of school district 14 to serve for a term of three years. -Miss Lil Dwight left Monday for Columbia, from which point she will leave to-morrow for an extended visit to relatives in St. Louis. -There will be two vacancies in Winthrop College from Fair field. Prospective applicants are requested to read advertisement elsemhere. -Dr. Jas. H. Carlisle, the venershlo ex-president of Wof ford, e-lebrated his 81st birthday Friday May 4. The day was observed as a holiday on the Wof ford campus. -Winn Lodge was well repre sented yesterday at the district convention Knights of Pythias at Fort Mill. The Mt. Zion nine also went up and crossed bats with the school team of that place. -Mr. J. H. Thornwell, Jr. will go to Ebenezer Thursday to de liver the Memorial address. Mr. Tb orn well has also been selected as the alumni orator for the Presbyterian College of South Carolina at its coming commence ment at Clinton in June. -At the annual meeting of ,the stockholders of the Young Men's Saving ar d Loan Associa. tion held a few evenings ago all the eld officers were re-elected. T. H. Ketchin and Dr. S. Lind say were elected directors in place of J. P. Caldwell and D. A. Crawford, resigned. Marriage at Blythewood. Mir. C. D. Wilson and Miss Kate McLane were .married at the home of Mr. E. B. Price in Blythewood Sunday evening, A pril 29 by Rev. G. P. White. A Successful Entertainment.p *The entertainment at the Thes pain Ball Friday evening for the l benefit of the Winnsboro Public Library proved asuccess in every~ way. The interesting program, as printed last week, was carried out to the delight of all. A nice sum, $37.00 net, was realized. This will at once be invested in books for the library. This ad dition will greatly stimulate the interest in the library and should result in the addition of still other members. Found Dead in Bed. Dr. Brum Reeves, son of Mr. - an d Mrs. R. C. Reeves of Long town, wad found dead in his bed at his father's horne yesterday morning. He was 24 years old and about a year ago completed his course in pharmacy at the Atlanta College of Pharmacy. Zion Society was held in the town hall Monday morning. ThE following officers were re-elected for the ensuing year: H. A. Gail lard, president; A. S. Douglass senior warden; J. Q. Davis, juniol warden; T. H. Ketchin, secretary and treasurer. J. C. Caldwell was elected as the Society's re presentative on the board o. trustees of school district no. 14 to succeed himself for a term o three years. Ice and Beef. Acting upon the suggestiot made in these columns last week the following dry goods storE will begin their early closing al 6 o'clock with the exception oj Saturday next Monday May 14 Caldwell Dry Goods Company Ketchin Mercantile Company D. This puts the early closing two weeks earliei than it has been heretofore, a feature that will be greatly ap preciated by the clerks and that will work to the advantage of the miarchants tr. if all the ladies will act in accordance with these hours and-that they should surely do. The grocery stores have al ready begun their early closing Dr. Quattlebaum in Winnsboro. -Dr. A. G. Quattlebaum, who graduated at the Southern Denta) College in Atlanta, last week has just returnetd home and will at once enter upon the practice of his profession here in his home town. His office will be the same as that occupied by his father, the late Dr. B. J Quattle baum, who practiced dentistry in Winnsboro for nearly a quar ter of a century with marked success. Dr. Quattlebaum re mained in Atlanta several days after his graduation in order to stand the examination before the Georgia board of examiners, sc that he might have a license in that state also. Dr. Quattlebaum's many friends are greatly pleased to know that he is to remain here in Winnsboro for the practice o: his profession and from the fine rocord that he has made at college they expect him to meet with success. W. S. flcDonald Resigns. Mr. W. S. McDonald, who has been a valuable clerk in the dry goods department of S. M. Jones & Co's store for about 3 years, has resigned to accept a more lucrative position with the New York Ljife Insurance Co., the resignation to go into effect the first of June. His territory will be Chester and Fairfield counties with headquarters in Chester. Mr. McDonald is an exemplary young man and we bespeak for him abundant success in his new business..-Chester Lantern. School Closing. Caldwe COUNTY CONVENTION rIET MON DAY Reorganized and Elected Delegates to the State Convention in Columbia May 16. The county convention met in the - court house Monday at 12 o'clock and was called to order by Chairman Brice. A temporary, -organization was effected by the 'election of J. E. McDonald as .chairman. The conventi' a was Teorganized by the election of T. 8. Bcice as president, Dr. J. J. *Robertson, vice-president and J. ZR. Curlee secretary. On motion Holly Grove's or ganization (a new club in the' -Cedar Creek section) was recog nized by the convention, and the -delegates therefrom'given a place in the convention. T. S. Brice was reelected county chairman. T. H. Ketchin was re elected member of the state ex ecutive committee. T. S. Brice was elected by acclamation as chairman of the delgation to the state convention. The other delegates elected were: A. Lee Scruggs, W. W. Dixon, D. L. Stevenson, J. B. Burley, J. R. Curlee, Dr. M. Langford, Jno. G. Mobley. The four defeat-I edII'candidates were elected d alternates: A. H. Brice, Dr. J. J1. I Robertson, S. R. Rutland, R. D. Bolick. The following resolution, in troduced by W. W. Dixon, was e freely discussed and then passed: o Whereas, the registration cer tificates and poll tax receipt-i . were conceived and designed with e other devices in our election ti laws to insure white supremacyg in the elections in our state and ! 'were not intended to be vexatious| on the voter when the contest was entirely between the white race, therefore be it. Resolved, that this convention put itself on record as opposed to any restrictions of the voters in the primary election of the Democratic party other than now in vogue and expressed in the F c'onstitution of the Democratic party.
