The following very interesting
letter from E.r. Win. V. King,
Superintendent N. Y. Cotton Ex
hange, was received by Mr.

the Southern Cotton association;

Atlanta, Ga.
Dear Sir:-Your favor of the
9th instant is received. Thanks
for President Jordan's cotton
statistics, etc., which give the
facts clearly and intelligently.
In my opinion the coming
planting season will prove to be
the most trying if not the most
:ritical in the experience of South,
er cotton growers. Trying, be
ause so many believe 10 or
lOj cents will prove so serious a
temptation to the planter that he
will put every available acre in
otton. This opinion in not con
fined to this section of the country
alone, but is endorsed by many
' the good people of the South,
not planters of cotton I am glad
to say.
It will indeed prove a critical
season for the planter and for the
entire south should the tempta
tion to over-plant in cotton be
carried out. Thie years of splen
did work of your association to
gether with thbat of others who
have co-opera t-d, will be swept
away, and a condition of servitude
for the planter w ill be reenacted
with its consequent 6 cents or 7
cents for cotton.

planters staud so idly together
and for their own protection
diversify the planting, potting in
a moderate acreage only in cotton.
If the the planter s will not pro
tect themselves in a matter of
such '7ital interest, to whom can

sumer.
To sum up the m.atter, the
situation for weal or for woe, for
7 or for 1'2c is entirely in the
bands of the planter. In a brief
interval of time the World wil]
know whether he has proven false
to imself or has had the courage
and manliness to resist the tem
pta ion which now threatens to
wrest from him the control of the
situatio'j.

A Rat Tail Tale.
A group of men were talking
on the square the other day, the
editor among them, when a phy
sician from the country said,
"Ddyuknow that a rat could
eatcasoroil out of a bottle
which is too small for him to get
his head into?" All said they
had never heard of such a thing
and then the physician explained
the modus operandi which he
had witnessed himself. In the first
Iplace the rat will eat the stopper
out of the bottle and than drop
his tail down in the oil, pull it
out and lick it clean of oil. This
operation will be repeated until
the rat gets all the oil out of the
bottle. Of course those present
thuhte doctor was making up
a yrn uthe said he could prove
it by a neigbor who was a very
trustworthy man. The others
attempted to get off something to
match the doctor's but the doctor
