Longtown Notes.
Your paper cano as :a very
welcome visitor to the Lougtown
graded school and we all ejoye I
it very much. We shaA look
forward to its weekly visits with
much pleasure and intend to keep
the tito of the paper.
Our school observed last Fri
day as Arbor Day and set cut 27
trees on our grounds, mostly
water-oaks, but the walnut, plum,!
china, cedar, silver maple, althea
and mock orange were represented.
We have plenty of room to oc
Cupy us for several arbor dai s
and will plant more trees and
shrubs later in the season. There
are twenty acres of land in the
school grounds, so yon see we
can Plaut to almost any extent we
wisbh. Our school has determined
to make the school grounds tl e
most attractive place in the com
3nunity. Nature and our trustees
have already done much for us.
We have a beautiful school builcl
ing and it is situated- upon a
beautiful -minence which will
lend itself to tree and flower de
coration very readily.
By the way, the school law of
1903 says that the third Friday
in November shall be observed
as Arbor Day, but the State, some
week or more ago, announced
that Friday, 3rd of November,
was Arbor Day; so on the strength
of this we observed the 3rd.
Can you inform us when the law
was amended?
We wonder how many teachers
of the State redeemed their pledge
taken at the summer school to
observe Arbor Day.
Miss Nora Curlee, our assistant
teacher, spent Saturday and Sun
day in Ridgeway, the guest of
Miss Willie Poovey.
Our school was represented at
the State Fair by Miss Fannie
Lewis, Tom Reeves, and Marion
Tidwell Our school did not open
until the 23rd of October and
therefore we did not give holiday
for the Fair.
Mr. Sloan, the State geologist,
was in this co.mmunity one day
last week on his way to a gold
mine near here.
Misses Sallie Lee Harrison,
Estelle Harrison and Cardie
Reeves, and Messrt J. D. Harri
son and Walter McEachern spent
several days at the Fair last week.
Can anyone tell ut, Mr. Editor,
what is the origin of the name
Indian Summer, as applied to
this season of the year?
Visitors will soon begin to
arriv~e at the club house situated
near here, as the huntiag season
has opened. Birds are said to
be plentiful in this neighborhood.
With best wishes for the con
tinued success of your paper, we
