WINNE1ORO, S. C.
Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1905.
That prediction of ours last
week that Lancaster would on
that dav get rid of the dispensary
was fully substantiated, as the
people of that county gave the
overwhelming vote of S to 1
against the Great Moral Institu.
tion. Horry also went the same
way, though the inijority was
not quite so large. Only Flor
ence of the nine counties in which
elections on the proposition of
voting the dispensary out have
been held, holds on to the pre
sent system of state cotrol of
the whiskey trafie. Fairfield
can well afford to go -with the
majority in her vote ou this
proposition of voting the dis
pensary out.
For the past four seasons
Winnsboro has enjoyed a ly ceum
course. These entertainments
have been the ocession for many
pleasant evenings to the people
of this community. Ulnfortuna
tely they have not been suflicient
ly supported for any one person
to feel wvarran tied in assumning
the responsibility for having the
same continued. But because of
this fact they must not be let go
by the board altogether. The
citizens of Winnsboro should get
together and see if something can~
not yet be done in the way of
providing suitable entetainmnen is
for at least a few of the winier
evenings. Let some one make
the start and then let all give the
movement their supp)ort and
make the lyeeum course a cer
tainty.
Elsewhere in this issue is
published the order of Supervisor
Burley for an election on the
proposition of voting the dis
pensary out of Fairfield county.
The petiti'ons, praying for an
election, contained over 4t00
names, which is easily more than
one fourth of all the registered

foot up a total of only about
1500 names. This election was
not ordereal until Supervisor
Burley was positively assured
that the petitions contained the
necessary one-fourth registered
voters. He did not accept the
certificate of the supervisors of
registration, but went carefully
over the books himself, counting
no name until found properly en
tered on the books .of registra
tion. The time set for the elec
tion, the second Tuesday in
December, will make it so that
those who are not now registered
can register the first Monday in
November. Those who cannot
find their registration certificates
can have duplicates issued at thaLt
time. However, what registering
is done that day should be~ done
egally and in accordance with
the law. It is time to call a ha t
