If Senator Tillman is to get the dispensary in a position, where it will be backed by a healthy public sentiment, he will be spar ed the necessity of taking his seat in the United States senate at its next session, as he will have a plenty to do at home. Senator Tillman magnifies his political troubles in making his defense of the dispensary a de fense of himself. The great moral institution is doomed and he will find that he can not save it. It is too great a burden for the people of South Carolina to carry much longer. For a genuine illustration of the real absurd, the effort of eer tain dispensary papers to make it appear that three of the best teachers in Pickens county are gon elsewhere to teach because the dispensary had been voted out, has the right of way. IfI these communities could really have offered, these men salaries. which they are to get in their new. fields, the little revenue arising from the dispensary would have been much more than made up by private contributions. The other suggestion from the News and Courier that perhaps these teachers were too accustomed to: their "wee drap" to live in a prohibition county is an altogt her out-of-place -reflection on the teaching profession. We invite the attention of all parents in Fairfield county cou templating sending their boys to a good preparatory school, to the jdvertisement of the Mt. Zion In stitute in this iss'ue. While the effort to enlarge this historie school by adding a boarding de partment thereto has been given up for the present, yet it is pos sible for patrons desiring to send their boys off to find a suitable place here in town for them to board and that at reasonable prices. TAPP CO. desiring to move to town for the school advantages can find no bet ter place than Winnsboro, which has ever taken just pride in its educational institution. The increased price of wool within the past few months should greatly stimulate the grow ing of sheep for wool as well as for mutton. Wool at thirty cents or more per pound makes sheep raising quite a different thing~ from what it was when it was on ly 163 to 18 cents per pound. It is a very poor flock that will not make an annual shearing of five pounds to each sheep. The pro ~eeds of the same would be at least 81.50 at the present high prices. With proper care arnd at tention the increase each yea should be at least ninety "per rent of the parent flock. It is easily possible to make a lamb worth from ::2.50 to 84.00 at si:: r.onths old. The wool will more than pay for the care of the whole flock. So the increase should all be clear profit. Then too there is another feature to be consider ed in connection with sheep - and that is that they are the most valr'.able of all animals for the improving of the land th~ey graze upon. During the night Saun camO in, li1hted a lam aj)nd bga to mnake hlaself at oie. lie was called upon to surrender; and instead of doing that, he blew out the light and fired, according to the evi dence brought out at the inquest. The following is the finding of the jury of inquest, composed of J uhn A. Stewart, Foreman; J. C. Stcwart. W. A. Blai, W. L. Mc Koown, Nelson Wiley, (colored) J. A. McCrorev, J. F. Cole;mau. J. D. Montgowery, S. L. Mont gornery, W. J. Pray, and Iaiah' Moore, (coloretl). We, the jurors summoned, em panelled and sworn on our oath to make a true enquiry into the cause of the death of Sam Wiley, do on our oaths aforesaid, present that the said Sam Wiley, came to his death while in the act of buir glarizing the store house of W. M. Patrick, at Woodward, S. C., by gunshot wounds at the hands of W. M. Brice, a clerk of W. '1. Patrick, and J. W. Brice and T. W. Lewis, who were all guard ing said store, and we each and all of us do exonerate the said W. .M. Brice, J. W. Brice and T. W. Lewis, who fired upod the said Sam Wiley in self-defense, and only after their own lives were in jr ardy. A search of the house of the deceased the next morning re vealed the fact many of the stolen goods wero in his possession. flusco Boulware Raines. On the morning of July 30th, at his home in Mitford, sur rounded by his family and many friends, the spirit of my kind friend, neighbor and comrade in arms, Musco B. Raimes, took its flight from this world of pain and sorrow to its abode above the skies. The subject of this sketch was born on the Wateree hills of this county fifty-nine years ago, where he lived all his upright and use ful life. He was a great sufferer for about six months before death came to his relief. He is survived by his affectionate and devoted wife, four daughters and one son, one brother, Mr. T. C. Raines, and two sisters, Mrs. Susan Mickle and Mrs. D. G. Smith, of Longtown. In the death of my lamented friend, Fairfield has lost a true citizen, a gener ons and kind neighbour, and Mt. Olivet Church a quiet and hum ble member. His remains were followed to and laid to rest by a large con course of relatives and friends in the cemetery at Mt. Olivet Church on Sunday evening at 4 o'clock. He was a devoted husband, a kind father, and a true friend to all that knew him. About the middle of the civil war. lhe volunteered his services in Company F, 7th Battalion, S. C. volunteers. There lie remained throughout that bloody struggle, faithfully obeying all orders as a true young soldier to the bitter end. He was wounded at the battle of Reams Station, Va., but he remained with his command doing hard service till General Lee sheathed his sword forever at Appotuattox. The bereaved ones have my heartfelt sympathy in their sor row. One by one we are rapidly crossing over the river to rest un der the trees.
