What cotton is being held in
the country should be carefully
pr)tected at this season. These
warm damp days are ideal
weather for causing it to rot.
The merchants of Camden
have already begun the closing
of their stores at 6 P. M. A
number of other towns are arrang
ing to begin the early closing the
first of May. No merchant can
lose anything by closing early.
There is all to gain on the part
of the clerks in increased ca
pacity for their work through the
opportunity for fresh air thus
afforded.
Within the next ten days it
will be demonstrated whether the
farmers of the South are going to
do the sensible thing by reducing
their cotton acreage or continue
the foolish policy of raising sev
eral million bales more cotton
than is required. These are the
the days for them to put into
action the resolutions which they
have been passing in their county
and State organizations.
It is being demnoistrated more
and more each year that sorghum
is the most valuable forage crop
that can be planted in this State.
An acre of sorghum on good
ground and well cultivated will
yield an abundance of green for
age to supphiment the corn and
grain crops i a the summer months
and prevent the necessity of buy
ing hay during the winter niortths
for at least two to four head of
stock. No farmer should fail
have to his p atch of this
valuable forage crop. Now is
the time to plant sorghum.
A Pub!sher's Pardonable Pride.
A few days ago we went to
Columbia for the purpose of
securing from Columbia mer
chants advertisements for the
News and Herald. Before going
down sample copies were sent to
those merchants whom we ezpectt
ed to call upon. While we did
not succeed in getting an adver
tisement from every merchant
visited, yet we did not fail in a
single instaice to have spoken
some word of commendation for
the News and Herald, both as to
its contents and its general get
up. The full page advertisement
that we are now carrying had
attracted especial attention, Qno
of Coluimbife 1,gest merghants
one whp lbeheves in the liberal
use of printer's ink, said that he
had seen nothing more creditable
in any of the daily papers. An
other merchant who closed a con
tract for a year said that the
p reposition to advertise in the
News and Herald appegled to
him because the paper. cqgtained
such mttey as would make it
read, a feature that is altogether
essential to making a paper a
success as an advertising medium.
But better still were the words
of commendation spke hy twa

been advertising in the News and
Herald for the past several
months. They both say that
their advertising in the News and
Herald is bringing them such~
good retgrag tat t4ey will con
tinge the same for the rest of
year.
It is but natural that we should
feel a pardonable pride on ac
count of these tangible expres
sions of appreciation g4 th@ News
en geml4 as an advertisiog
mdium. Fairfield's only paper
goew-into three-fourths of the
horoes of the county and is read
by at leabL four out of every five
white people in the county.
