While it has been known for ome years that the county was a debt, and that on account oft he failure of the delegation in he General Assembly to make he necessaay levy that the com aissioners had asked for, it was etting deeper in debt, 3 et it is matter of general surprise that his indebtedness has reached' uch alarming figures. The rea on more correct information has ot been obtainable in regard to he county's finances is the fact hat the retiring supervisor has ept no record of the claims is ued, and so has had no positive nowledge of the county's finan ial condition. There is no way ,f determining from the books ,hat the county's indebtedness ras when Mr. Hood went into' flice., for there -was no book eeping whui he came in. Nor 3 it possible to ascertain the ex enditures of each year since he ame into the office, as this could nly' be done by going over all aims that have been paid and hecking them off by the date of ssuance. All the claims, however, are ot in, and there is no way of etermining what claims are still ut. Nor is there any way for ny one who has gotten a claim iisplaced to get a duplicate for he same. So if there is any one bat has any claims against the ounty they should hold on to hem, as it is very probable that hey will have to do befoie the ash is forthcoming. When all he claims are in, the indebted ess is going to be considerably bove the figures giveu. It is not charged that Mr. [ood has been one whit dishon st.
