The ticks were taken to carry
provisions in and mother's black
bonnet and long creoe veil thrown

Bed clothes, ladies' dresses and
even' children's clothes were ta
ken. Jellies, preservas and all
eatables quickly disapp eared. In
the fowl vard one ola goose and
a rooster~were all which were left
to tell the tale. Our nice' carri:age,
with its top cut off, was, usedl to
carry meat in. Two fine horses,
the mules, the cows, the sheep
and the hogs were all taken. One
cow went off with mother's side
saddle strapped on her.
As we sat in our desohdte home,
trying to keep warm, an old sol
dier came in, looked around, and

JI all diroctions could be seen
burning aiidings. Our gin house
wa P. smoking ruin; the railroad
a lin* of smoke, indeed, the whole
world seemed on fire. Starvation
stared us in the face, but we had
to fiud scmething to satisfy our
hunger and, as we looked aroun,d
the first thing which came to
hand was the heads of thirteen
hogs. The soldiers had killed
them and taken the rest, throw
ing the heads away. A few hams,
hidden away in the scuttle, were
brought out. Corn, which had
been hauled to the woods and
put in pens, was saved. This
gave us hominy and meal, for we
had a small hand mill we could
use, and then some was made
into lye hominy. Thi9 fare was
coarse and rough; but we had.
f e appetites and were thankful
a> get it. Our grandfather from
Richland soon came, with a cow
and calf and provisions. Rela
tives from town and others in
Newberry administered to our
wants and we began to live again.

The Jefferson Bible.
Throngh the kindness of Hon.
D. E. Finley, member of congress
from this district, Rev. C. E. Me
Donald has received a copy of
the so-called Jefferson Bible,
more accurately, "The Life and
Morals of Jesus of Nazareth."
It is in parallel columns in Greek,
Latin, French and English.
Mr. Jefferson took a copy of
the New Testament in each of
these languages and extracted
from them what he conceived to
be the teachings of Jesus on
morals and pasted these excerpts
in a blank book in parallel col
umns. It has a title page and a
table of the texts used, in Jeffer
son's own handwriting.
The original book was bought
1 by the government in 1895, and is
now in the national museum at
Washington.
By resolution of the fifty
seventh congress, an edition of
this work was printed and bound,
by photo-lithographic process,
with an introdoction by Dr. Cyrus
Adler, librarian of the Smithso
nian institution. The'copy that
Mr. McDonaid has is one of
these, ad1 i's an exact reproduc
tion of the original. It is a work
of inter6st and curiosity.
Mr. McDonald has left it for
awhile in the Winnsboro Public
library. whe6re it may be seen by
any one who may desire to exam
ine it.

Farmers Organize.
Editor News and Herald:
The farmers of the Salem
neighborhood met at the Luk-c
school house last Saturday, Jan.
21si:, and organized a farmers
club. The following officers were
elected: President, M. B. Martin;
vice-President, 0. 'B. Jenkins;
Secretary, C. M. Ladd; Treasurer,
J. M. Yongue.
After several talks by some of
the most prominent farmers, the;
meeting was adjourned until the
afternoon of Saturday, the 28th,
19 05, when business will corn
mnence in earnest. At this meet
iug they will discuss the present
cotton situation, the fertilizer
qluestion and the reduction of the
acreage for the next cotton crop.
