NEWS AND HERALD. PUBLJSIIED WEEKLY, ' --BY WINNSBORO PRINTING CO. J. FRANK'OOSHE, - - EDITOR T2:sS, Uq ADVA CE:. One Year,..........................--$-50 Sx:oDths................... .75 WINNSBORO, S. C. Wednesday, Septeimber 3, 1902 The defeat of Jim Tillman for gubernatorial honors gives joy I unspeakable. H'aving made one successful a prophecy as to the results in a certain county election our pro- ( phesying in- local political mat- I ters is uow ended. Having failed to get the vote by boxes on the proposition to issile bonds for the removal of the jail-and the improvement of the court house, we can only give the total vote as made by the executive committee which is 600 "yes" and 619 "no." . The measure it will be seen lost by a majority of only 19. It is a great pity that so important a measure came so near carrying and then lost. But the measure is not yet dead for all time, and we trust that it will be a very short time all the people will have the opportunity of voting on this im portant question again. We -feel sure that the more the mat ter is thought of, the more "yes"' votes there will be. The cause of education sus tains a distinct icss iu Mx. Me Maha's. defeat. He has done more as State superintendent of educatiox than any of his prede- t cessors, and at no time since he f has bee.i in the office has he had I things so well under way. The i pity of it is that his defeat is I due to, his. being held responsible I for a. matter that he was in no t wise responsible for as was well I shown in the letter of the other memibers of the State board. We have always looked upon his suc- I cessor as a good school man, and I we trust that the work sa well I begun by MXr. HEYWARD AT HOME - iven Solid Vote by His People--Col leton Farmers Appeal to Farmers of South Carolina to Support Him. It is said by old politicians - that no candidate for a State of - fice has ever before been tender ed such an endorsement by his home people as that given Capt. r Beyward in the first primary by 8. the people of Colleton. He got 2,258 votes against 135 for the mn other four candidates-or 96 votes out of every 100 cast. This is all the more remark able when it is remembered that n Colleton has heretofore been very seriously divided pblitically. It is a magnificent testimonial to Heyward by the people who know him best. ~'n addition to their votes the fat-mers of Colleton, hundreds ol them. of every kind and class, the p. followers of Ben Tillmnan. and Sheppard and Haskell ,have sign. .ed this address to the farmers ol South Carolina: "State of South Carolina, County ' of Colleton. 1,We the undersigned, farmers ol IColleton county, hereby endorse Capt.. D. C. Heyward for govenoi ns in the next primary, and earnesf* ey ly' urge the farmers throughoul >. the State to vote for him. Capt. Heyward has been a practical farmer all his life, and is there fore, thoroughly acquainted withj our condition and needs.
