A Narrow Escape.
Saturday, Mr. Hancock, a gen
tleman who lives in the western
section of the cune, came very
~near haing a serioiWt.
While driving through town abouT1
three o'clock, his horse became
~frightened and ran away. On at
tempting to stop the horse, the
Sbuggy was turued very suddenly
and Mr. Hancock was thrown
very violently to the ground,
~bruising his face and head con
siderably. When first picked up
he was unconscious, but Dr.
~Hanahan and Dr. Lindsay soon
dressed his wounds and relieved
him a great deal. Although pain
ful, this was a very narrow es
cape, as Mr. Hancock is about
seventy-fire years of age.
Old Plaid's Convention.
"What is meant by the 'Old
Maids Convention' that is to be
11eld here June the 18th is a ques
tion?" that is' being asked by
;many. Some even want to know
if it means that there is going to
be a convention of all of the old
maids of the State. The editor
of The News and Herald is at a
full loss to know what is to take
place that night. But from an
has just been held in Union under
the direction of the same young
lady that is to have control of
the convention that is to be held
here, he would infer that there is
a rich treat in store for the people
of Winnsboro. Be sure that you
'Aiow fully what the Old Maids
Convention is, and the surest way
to get this information is to at
tend.

A Sunday Shooting.
Sunday evening as Rev. E. P.
Taylor and his wife were going
to the Greenbrier church they
heard two pistol shots directly
behind them. On turning around
a man ran out from the bushes
and shot ag'ain at the parties in
the buggy that was just behind
them. He then fled. An investi
gation developed the fact that
the woman had received a severe
wound in the arm and that the
man was seriously wounded, hav
ing been shot in the back and leg.
It is not thought that lie will
live.
The man who did the shooting
was Walter Brice. The woman
shot was Brice's wife. The man
who is now in such a critical con
dition is Will Moore, of Blythe
wood, who seems from the cir
cumstances to have superseded
Brice in his wife's affections.
Brice evidently meant to kill both
his wife and her hover. He has
come in and surrendered to the
sheriff.
