Tho following from The Charlotte
Observer yesterday ls of interest :
"One cotton mill unit a year" is
tiie plan and purpose of Air. James
B. Duko and associates for this terri
tory according to 'well authenticated
statements euiaiiKting from sources
thoroughly -reliable.
By the term "unit" is meant the
mill proper, the mill village and then
all the adjuncts that go along to con
stitute a completo plant for thc
production of textile products. Some
of the unite are large while thc oth
ers aro ce-niparatively small, although
lull of them aro relatively large when
compared with tho majority of mills
in this section.
By tho tenn "association" il is not
meant that Mr. Duke must have

er, E. C. Marshall, Z. V. Taylor, or
E. Thomasin to tho company, but
that any cotton mill men wiso have
the reputation of being good manu
facturers, who aro willing to go Into
tho proposlton with their monoy and

ly "backed" to thc limit in auy tex
tile enterprise that holds forth the
promise ,of safe and satisfactory re
turns.
There is only one condition prece
dent to the enterprise and that ls that
the mill must bo located somewhere
on tho. Piedmont & Northern Hue.
It ls-not necessary to require that
motive power shall be procured from
the Southern Power Bystem for that
will bo dictated by good business
judgment andi sense. The vast major
ity of mills are now being "carried"
hy-tlie hydroelectric syBtem. Indeed,
Mr. Duke has been quoted as declar
ing that after this summer that cot
ton mill in this section which shows
smoko escaping from its smokestack
ls an evidence ci extravagant opera
tion in view of tho fact secondary
power will be available nt prices that
will put coal out of tho question as
a competitor.

Just the significance of this latest
plan -of Mr. Duko is one hard to
grasp .at. finit, bl us'\. . .It means .more
and more that .this section ls to be
come in fact as1 well as in name tho
center of the textile interests of the
?roath and may ho of tho nation.
There are mills now going up with
surprising rapidity and this means
that the number will bo augmented.
For some time past, lt has "been the
exception whon a new. cotton mill was
not announced for Gaston county
eyory week or two. This prevalence
of mills is to bo extended to Meck
lenburg and. other counties within the
zone of Interurban activity.
Tho Southern Power-Duko Inter
ests 'today control a surprising num
ber of cotton mills.' and there- are
scores and scores of others In which
they aro largely Interested. It Is
good business for them to maintain
.theso interests and also to cultivate
others; for they reap the- benefits at
SO many tiirns. For instance tho

brings in tho raw material and then

spun into yarn or woven'into cloth

duct to tho markets of tho world;
