(My Associated Prosy.)
Berlin, April ."..-Nearly uOO.OO'l
women are now" nt ono kind of work
or another In Berlin. They havo
swarmed Into almost every field of
uctlvity, no matter how difficult; they
are earning moro money than they
ever luid before; many dove lost their
own bread winners and are for all
time dependent upon their own ?t
roits. The probable unwll'liigness of
t ie women to go back to their homes
after the war is beiii^ more and moro
anticipated by the labor loaders who
say the women must go in favor of
tho men when tho time comes.
By far the largest proportion ol
the women now employed in Berlin
aro unskilled workers, only a small
part are customarily so employed.
They have done wonderfully well, even
in saich^lilllcult and stronous occupa
tions as metal workers, but they are
not, because of physical handicaps,
thc eiiual of their male predecessor'-.
Just how largo will be the nu'.b11"
of widows, or of women left with
crippled husbands, after the war, the
labor leaders do not attempt as yet
to intimate. TlieBe, on Vie one hand,
constitute, however, hut part of the
problems. Fully as* puzzling is the
question of what to do with tho^c
women who, though they lntor will
have other means of support, are ex
pected deliberately to balk at retiring
to a non-productive life again.
Tho employer wtio is able to hire
women more cheaply than men, will he
loath vto change to the old method,
and for a time ls not going to he
able to afford it. A not inconsldci
ablo degree of diplomacy combined
with n Judicial use of compulsion 's
going to be necessary, labor leaders
feel, before the problem can be
adjusted. ,
There ls hardly an occupation into
j which women have not crowded dur
ing the past year. Tie employment
of women as street car conductors is
r.lieady an old and familiar condition,
and women "motormen" have become
more or loss familiar sights even in
tho busy downtown streets of Berlin.
Thc Brat woman taxicab chauffeurs
waB noted early' last summer, and
she lins multiplied somewhat sine;;
then. Tho construction company
building scetions ,of tho city has for
months employed feminine "huskies1."
young and old, foil shovelling ?nt the
sandy underpinning of the street.
Two years ago.tho streets of the
capital were cleaned by men of mili
tary agc. Their places were takau
by boys, and now women are bel?g
introduced as fast as the youths grow
up to military age and enter the ar
my. It ls a common sight on any
street to see coal being carted Into
residences from beams by women in
stead of men.
Tho underground railway companies
of Berlin months ago installed women
as ticket choppers, and then. Intro
duced them as guards. When It was
found that their, dresses frequently
got caught in doors, the companies
did not go back to male help hut or
dered tho women to don bloomers,
and today there are more of them to
be ueen than mm.
Even German:;, accustomed to see
ing women performing heavy dutier,

gasped a little when they heard that
the steam railroads, In addition to in
stalling women at the stations for
minor duties, 'had put them h. i.
traek walkers, switch tenders ami
track Inyers. Yet the Prussian rail
ways today . have a large number of
wemen now in I heir employ.
It iv almost universally admitted
that the women do not adequately
substitute for the men. Women con
ductors, for Instance, are said to bc
about f>0 per cchl as eflicient as tlisir
predecessors, and only about half cf
those who go IQ work as conductors
are aldo to stand the strain. There
has been a notable increase in cor
tain women's diseases resulting di
rectly from this work.
Pew of tf;e trades are harder or
more strenuous than meta) work,
which just now, of course, is boom
ing because of the neel of ammuni
tmn. Yet. there are thousands of
women thus employed today, who do
not seem to mind tho heavy work,
and who ure earning, relatively, a
great Jeal of hv::?ey.
