ON PICTURE FAKERS
Berlin, Oct. 20. - (Associated Prc:
Correspondence.)-In attempting to
put a stop to the pernicious activities
ot a picture faker who has been hawk
ing about retouched, enlarged and
Indistinct photographs of a group of
900 German prisoners of war in
France, who were said to bo confined
in a camp where lotter writing was
forbidden, the authorities have had
renewed evidence of the dtosperatness
with which people cling to tho. hope
that their soldier relative, reported 03
"missing" may ntill be alive.
Tho picture in question, which sold
for four marks, was so indistinct that
that faces could not ho correctly di3
tinguished. The allegation that tho
men In tho picture were not allowed to
write hus led thousands of women to
imagine that nth least their missing
relatives wore located, to fancy they
could mako out resemblances, to re
vive hopes almost dead and believe
that thc long silence was explained
by the letter prohibition ami to In
vest their little savings In the photo
graph .
Tho German government, finding re
peated evidence that the hopes of wo
men oro being buoyed up by fancied
resemblances discovered in this pic
ture got in touch with tho French
government through a neutral power,
and sifted tho matter to the bottom.
Tho original photograph was tak
en, lt has boen established, at Issou
dun. ' Every Gorman impro3oncd
there, the French government ha as
sured Gormany, has boon reported
through tho regular channels as a
prisoner of war, and every one of
them io allowed and encourage*!" to
write home. Most of thom have dono
so.
The Gorman government bai discov
ered that poor women, hearing about
tho plcturG but unable to buy lt, have
saved up their pennies together until
thoy should bet tho requisite four j
marks and try thus to traco their |
missing relatives who in a*U proballty |
are dead. The picturo swindler who
has been trading on the hones of wo
men has not yet been rounded up.
The government in the meantime has
sent out a warning in tho hopo of
checking the abuse.
