WhlUier was born in An derson county, October ll, 1850. and h.id Just completed his Muir year. With hld brother, W. C. Mr. Whltner was graduated from tho law department of the Uni verslty of Virginia, but never actively entered his profession. Mr. Whltner waa an extensive farmer and spent much of his time on his farm near the city, which he constantly slorev to develop. Al though ho cultivated many acres of cotton ho grew lils corn and grain crops und was gradually seeding to hay and cover crops. For many years Mr. Whltner waa a members of tho public works commis sion, until that body was dissolved by tho establishment of commission gov ernment, and* by .'eis cooperation and counsel rendered invaluable service' to the citizens of the city in tho de velopment uud perfection of a first class waterworks system. Ho gave freely of his time and study in the interest or tho work handled by the commission and was novler too busy with personal affairs to neglect his public flftT/9. Street yesterday after noon soon after Mr. Conway reached the city. It ha been definitely decided to show the circus at the Mooro show grounds opposite Buena Vista park. Thc gentlemen mentioned above went from tho Blue Ridge Freight depot down Fant street, past the Mattress Factory on out Elizabeth street and Kaufman avonuo and into East Uiver street onto tho lot which is high and dry; and even should lt rain very hurd during tho night or earl ymorn lng, tho show grounds will ho drj enough so that no one need suffer any inconveniences from the wei grounds. . The circus is to como here from Columbia on four trains; tho first Cine left Columbia ut ten last night, and the then us rapidly as the railroad will permit until thc last one leaves there at two this morning; this is the most important train of tho en tire circus; it contains thc trained animals und performers, and should this train meet with any serious bad luck lt will not reach hero in time for tho parade, however, thill ls all conjecture, and it ls hoped that thc catiro circus will roach here In good shape and the parade wll be hold au contemplated.
