DIB f. HOUSTON TO BE AT PENDLETON HAS WIRED TO ASCERTAIN DATE OF HIS APPOINT MENT CARE FOR CROWDS Col. Stabling Visitor and Stated Yesterday That Committees Working Over Time. r ._ "The Hon. David P. Houston, sec retary of the United States depart ment of agriculture, has telegraphed to find out when he ie to make his ad dress at the centennial celebration of the Pendleton Farmers' society," de clared Col. J. C. Strlbling, president of t'ae society, who was a visitor in the city yctftferday. "The eecretary states in lite telegram that ho pro poses to spend Wednesday, the 13tb, at the celebration, and I have wired him that wo expect hl.n on the ros trum at 10 o'clock. He will not begin speaking exactly at Cat hour, be cause wc want to give him a recep tion before he starts. Ho bas stated that bo wants to shake tho band of ovory member of the Pendleton Far mers' socb.-ty, and that will take 30 minutes and may be more." Col. Strlbling Is bubbling over with enthusiasm. He sa>'3 tlwt all of the couimllteemcn are working over time, and that everything is shaping up nicely for the great celebration. "It is going te be oss grand buccusa, and tho biggest thing wo have ever held up dn this part of the country," de clared the; colonel. The society Is in receipt of- the fol lowing letter from Major BcnJ. Sloan of Columbia: "I am enclosing with my check for ten dollars a request to be enrolled ae an honorary member of the Pendloton Farmers' society. I shall esteem it as a high honor to be so enrolled. "Tim affections of my heart are cen tered on the scenes and associations of my boyhood days in old Pendleton, and as the days go by i'.iis affection grows stronger and stronger. "I shall, If possible, be present at your centennial celebration InOcto S*?r, to which I have beon kindly iu ?\ted to attend by your chairman of rntertalnnient committee, Mr. B. H. Sadlor." Col. Strlbling says ho greatlly ap port?tes this letter from Mai. Sloan, and. that the major will bo elected to t ie "highest honors" of tho society at the last special meeting of the century, which will be held next Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. Sloan's desire to be enrolled as an honorary member ot the society. During bis visit In Pen dleton MaJ. Sloau will be the guest of Col. Strlbling. The question of serving dinners to the hundreds of visitors during the three days of the celebration was dis cussed by Col. Strlbling today. "There will be four restaurants, and the proprietor of ono of these tells me he can serve 1,000 dinners each day,"- aaid Col. StrlbHng. uIn ad dition to this the ladles of the Meth odist nnd Presbyterian churches and the elvi? association will have hrus?s .for serving dinner. And at the meet ing of the society to bo hold Wednes day the matter of the society's backing up the move for a daily barbecue will be discussed. A barbecue served every day will bu a drawing card and will care for many. We do not an ticipate any trouble at all about feed ing the visitors?they'll get a plenty and more." The colonel said that Prof. Harper is advised that an Old razor back hog has been shipped to Pendleton, and that another Is to be brought from the mountains above Walhalla. Mr. J. W!. Wofford has beer select ed to manage the .exhibit hall. The exhibits will bo on display In the so ciety's "all, and all persons having re lics of any description are asked to send them in. They will be well car ed for and returned. The commit tee especially wishes pictures of eld members of the society and pictures of j prominent citizen s of the past and prosent time. Col. Strlbling wants the public re minded of the fact that the exhibit from the state depot troent of agricul ture will be housed in Pendloton dur ing the celebration. "There will be two largo store rooms in addition to tho farmers' nail set aside for these exhibits. And Form an Smith Is go ing to nave a splendid exhibit of grain,' also. Mr. Smith kindly states be will be glad to direct the preparation of the exhibits," declared the colonel "Person* desiring to operate soito bus lines from Pendleton to Clemson and to CaChoun will be permitted to . do so, and they 11 make a lot of mon ey out of it," declared Col. Strlbling. He says the society is anxious to have every convenience possible for the visitors. Capt. J. R. Anderson of the Blue R4dgc railway expects to start an ad vertising campaign for the celebra tion in the next day or so.
