Anderson college went to Columbia
Thursday to confer with William Jen
nings Bryan about bia coming to
Ande, ?on sometime during the win
ter to deliver an address. Upon his
return (Mr. Durnctte stated that Mr.
Bryan discussed the matter favor
ably and stated that very likely he
would be able to come to Anderson
later in the season provided ho wa3
not sent abroad on thc peace mission
which 1? being contemplated.
Afr. Burnett stated that Vr. Bryan
was not free to make engagements
after November 1, because of this
proposed peace mission abroad, and
that nil of his time up until then
was occupied. However, Mr. Bryan
stated ti'.'<it (he would be glad to come
to Anderson ono night during tho
winter provided he did not go
abroad.
If Mr. Bryan comes to Anderson
he will do sd under the . auspices of
Anderson college and tho address will
bo made in the college auditorium.

the executive committee of the cham
ber ot commerce, stated last night

secretary of the organization.
On Thursday night a meeting nf

Anderson, he to take the work and
devote part of his time to it.

medal to Miss Edith Hand, the little
heroine who saved the lives of her
four little sisters when her father's
home, was burne?! in Williamston on
August 2G, Judging from Ino fact that
newspaper accounts of the fire and
her deeds hav6 been caked-for. Na
particulars la regard to what tho
committee expects to do is known,
but it ia a fact that they have called
for accounts of tho heroic efforts ot
the little girl.
- It will be remembered that early
In tho morning of August 26, tbe
home of Mr. J. M. Hand In William- i
ston was destroyed by fire and that!
his little son, F.oy, was burned to i
death. Haring this fire Mr. Baud's [
little 13 year old daughter, Edith, res
cued three o flier little Bisters, who
Were sleeping In tho same room with
her, by carrying them from the bed
room to the porch and dropping
them into the anns of her father.
Had lt not been for her efforts, all
three ut the little ones would have
been burned to death. After doing
this t?te rushed back to go across the
hall to arouse her brother but the
flames were too much for her and
she had to turn back. Her screams
were also the -cause of her parents,
who were sleeping downstairs, to be
aroused in time to get out of t.'ie
building.

Mayor Godfrey stated yesterday

received from the state tax commit, i
sion to insure this city's hoing able |
to issue $12,000, certainly $10,000 of j
the remaining $20,000 street paving
bonds ordered at the recent election.
Several months ago $100,000 of 1
street paving bonds were authorized I
andi $80,000 of these bonds were is- i
sued and sold, this amount almost \
taking up tho bond limitation of lhe
City. This limitation is based on the
tax assessments, being 8 per cent of
Uite same, and the assessment figures
for tlie year IBID are now becomins ,
available.. Under the figures now be
ing announced by the tax commission
a portion ol' the $20,000 can be Is
sued, the assetJinents for tho city of
Anderson showing a material In
crease over. 1914. Since all of the
assessments have not been announced
yet, the bond margin may be mode
larger when they are known.
If Ute city is able to issue $10.000
of the $20,000 of bonds, which now
.seems likely, the city will be able
to do $30,000 worth of paving in ad
dition to that already outlined by the
commission.
This matter has been discussed at
'tho meetings of tho paving commis
sion several times, but up until yes
terday lt was) ini;>os?ible to learn
what if.B tax assessment on certain
property in the city would bo. At t!ie
?last meeting of tho paving commission
Mayor Godfrey was appointe! os a
committee to get these figures as
soon as possible.
In this connection it might be stat
ed that the elty engineer has
surveyed > Monning street and finds
that tills street,,from River to Whit
ner, can be paved with asphalt, and
that McDuffle street. Benson to Wlilt
ner, can be "paved with asphalt, the
cost of the two Jobs not to exceed
$3,000. It is.understood this will ?till
leave a cash balance witti the treasur
er of the commission from tho pre
vious bond) and certificate sales.
It will be recalled that tho city
engineer was'directed to make a sur
vey of Manning-' street and prepare
costs of paving/this street. Mc Duffle
street is .paved ?jWith asphalt from
Hampton to ^Gresnv'lle with the ex
ception bf ono bTock. between Henson
ahd Whltner, and- tf te engineer has
?prepared figures for paving this block
also. The Belgian /block paving on
this block ls in bad condition, and
nooda repairing, and the street needs
widening and other improvements.
By paving this short block McDuffle
street will be one continuous paved
street. This matter has not been
before the commission, but lt is un
derstood ti:at property holders on the
block have circulated a petition ask
ing that their street bo finished like
tho other sections of McDnifile. ,
HAD LEG BROKEN
Amos Craft of Local Fire Department
Bad Accident.
Yesterday morning Amos Craft ot
the local fire department had his leg
broken when a motorcycle on which
he was riding skidded and Crrew him,
his left being cans* beneath the ma
chine.
Mr. Craft was riding up an North
Mate street near Menefield's store
and was going at a rate of about io
miles .per hour. At the intersection
of another street a mule and buggy
Suddenly darted out and In ord r to
keep from bunning into the vehicle,
Mr. Craft had. ito tarn quickly. In
so doing, the motorcycle skidded
wW* the above stated results.
Mr. Craft was taken to Dr. Ash
more's office and the -broken bones
reset. It was discovered that loth
bones in his right leg had been brok
en which will necessitate Mr. Craft
being disabled about two months.
