ILL REVOLUTIONIZE
' TORPEDO in
ANDERSON MAN HAS NEW
IDEA FOR VESSEL
PROTECTION
TO SUBMIT PLANS
Lieut Com. Richardson Say* Idea
is Good and Originai Prob
abiy Make Test.
Mr. P. C. Osteen of tbts city Is
working on something that if ever
completed, will prob Ably revolutionise
sea warfare, in that it will protect
vessels from the torpedo, which is
now probably the greatest enemy of
the battleship. Lieut. Com. Louis C.
Richardson, U. 8. N., was in the city
jfjsterday and con fen M with Mr.
Osteen regarding to the proposed in
ven tlo. . He stated that the idea was
excellent and urged the Inventor to
have a test made if possible. Mr.
Osteen has already received letters
from the United States navy depart
ment in regard to the plans he in
tende to work upon.
Mr. Osteen thinks that vt.-.?'- can
be protected by magnets placed off
tiio aide of the ships which will at
tract the torpedoes to them, the con
tact of which when-struck will cause
the explosion before the battleship is'
hit.
The idea as formulated is some
what as follows:
At present all modern battleships
are equipped with large neta which
are placed at a distance of about SO
feet from tbe side of the vessel when
attacks are expected to be made, the
object of the net being to catch or
hold off the torpedo. Torpedoes now
tiaed are, however, equipped with
sharp -blades which cut through the
pets and they do practically no good.
. Mr. Osteen in tendu to place mag
nets in' this net to attract the torpe
does and caused them to fire before
reaching the ship. Lieut. Com.
I/.chardson suggested that these be
placed eight feet apart In the net.
A torpedo is generally fired so aa
to strike the object under the vessel
within a space or belt of eight feet.
The upper Une is eight feet from the
lower, so if a magnet is placed in the
center of the net, speaking of the
width, it would pnviably draw the
torpedo up four feet or down four
feet, aa the case might he. This
being the case, magnets placed at
every eight feet would, attract them
also should they he tired so as to
strike in the center of the net, length
Wise, between, the magnets.
The nets aa now used have a
weight of 400,000 pounds and it is es
timated that the magnets, counting
about 100 to both sides of the ship,
woald not weigh over 40,000 pounds;
which would not materially Increase
the weight.
Lieut. Com. Richardson stated yes
terday that the idea war, indeed a
good one and was now. Mr. Os
teen will have plans submitted and
It Is probable that a test will be made
in the near future.
