THE WESLEY BIBLE CLASS.
Written by Frank J. Tripp AH ile
Secs lt.
Thc Wesley Bible class or today, if
not already, is fast becoming tho
strong ann of the church. lt is
meeting a long felt need that has been
so long neglected la the church. That
ls In getting everybody In tho Sun
da yschool only a few years ago thu
Sunday school wus looked upon HS
feminine or infantile society only the
place for old womca and Utile child
ren.
But thank God, today through the
workings of His spirit in tito Wesley
adult and other organized classes thc
Sunday school is no longer a nursery
or hospital Ailed with invalids and
infants but it is a live institution
throbbng with,?he roil blood of strong
man and nublo womanhood.
Man has at last been awakened to
<,ho fact that he ls his brothers keeper
with this Tact at hand tho Wesley
Adult lilllie class is gloriously (Hiing
this mission so long lett Vacant in
our own church. With those facts
before us lot us notice sume things
tbat can and aro happening every day
in the adult classes.
lu the first place we cnn notice our
own opportunity for service to our
church and our fellow man, oind
there thc old Baraca class hymn
comes In very appropriate, "Make mo
a blessing to some ono today.". Here
ls ono of our opportunities for ser
vice. Looking around about us wc
can seo tho ripe, ready harvest and
the field ls not o,vcr stocked with
labor?is. Wc can find ?coros, yea
hundreds of people li this city, who
are out cf thc Sunday school out of
tho church and perhaps worse strang
er? to grace.
Can't wo atop in our mad rush for
rlcasure and popularity and tho
things that this world has to offer
and turn our attention to these pleas
uro loving world serving people about
us and ask them to como with us as
suring thom that we will do thom
good and that they also might be
blessing to us? Then nt tho judge
ment bar of God we nor they can't say
no man cared for my soul.
While tho effort may be one talent
one who knows but what our ono tal
ent efforts might result In bringing a
Ave or ten talent man or woman to
Christ.
A few years ago In the city of Phi
ladelphia, a poor shoe maker sat on
his bench doing hi? dally work when
a drunken street bum staggered in
and asked if he might shelter and
warm and protect himself from a hit
ter storm that was raging without.
Tho shoemaker was a follower of
Him who came to give shelter to thc
homeless and to feed i thc hungry, to
bind up thc broken hearted and bo
a friend to the outcaBt and forsaken,
and to give liberty to thc captive. Not
only allowed him to warm but got him
better and more comfortable clothes
and then gave him eocmthing to oat
and then be carried him to the little
gospel mission there.he heard thc old,
old story of Jesus and his love. Ho
hear the story how Christ had come
Into thc life of'the shoemaker and the
others present and transformed them
from drunken Vagabonds to d scent
citizens. Tho man was converted
and went out of that place not tho
drunken down-and-out that ho had
been, but nof John B. Gough, thc
I kraut temperance worker and reform
ier, and In after yours proved to bo a
ten talent man, saved through the
[effort of a ono talent man.
I In the second pince what caa hap
llpen through thc devotional servico
II this ls a very Important place and thc
? successful class gives this department
Uof thc class credit for much of the
??success accomplished? Many mun and
y women too have been brought to a ?
truer knowledge of God rom thc
prayers of thc class In the devotional
meeting or of thc tender ministries of
tho class in the sick room or in some
dark hour of disappointment or afflic
tion. And back to the Bick room just
hero I think that wo can do our best
.and most lasting work. You remem
ber our Savior said that v/c gave a
cup of cold water in his name that
\we wouldn't loso our reward.
Then thirdly comes tho social'ser
vice, another great and Important
feature of the class. 'When God creat
ed ?man be made him among other
things a social being and placed in
him a groat social naturo ono to be
cultivated and to grow and when wo
use the word social we overlook some
of tho stuff that is palmed off on us
today called social and society.
We mean to mingle with oar class
and our friends and all come to gath
er as one great family all working for
ono common end and that the upbuild
ing of our class our church and our
community thes? conditions can bo
helped throgh tho social service de
partment of any class. Wo caa got
closer together and cj.n know and
understand each other better, then
naturall ywe will be in a better po
sition to help bear one another's bur
dens.
To do this successfully . we must
forget the conditions and the clr^.-.in
stances around us and feel that the 1
whole success of thc class depend on
jue as au individual. And if 1 rail to
do my duty as a member I ara hinder
ing the progress of the class. Then
I will ask myself this question "If
every member of my class was Just
Uko me what kind of a class would my
class be.'* , ,
Then finally one other thlag I will
montion and that ls one of equal im
portance "The Teacher and, bia Mes
sage." thc teacher to be a successful
toucher abould each Sunday have a
mr-ssago for his or her class. And
this message should be a simple one;
many teachers have lost and wasted
! their opportunity by bringing their
class the wrong message.
I fear sometimes that we take too
? much time going into the historical
and geographical setting ot the.les
son and by so doing too often loose
sight ot the crosss. The one great
theme for which so many souls are
hungry.
As I have already said the success
ful teacher has a simple message aud
that emssage bi the old story of Jesus
and his love this U tho one universal
