LESSON
(Br E. O. 8ELL.ER8. Acting Director ot
Sunday School Course. Tho Moody Ulolo
Institute of Chicago.)
LESSON FOR JULY 25
SOLOMON DEDICATES THE TEM
PLE.
LESSON TEXT-I Kl n-rs 8:22-30.
GOLDEN TEXT-My house shall be
called a houso of pruycr for all people.
Isa. W:7.
To teach this lesson properly refer
ence must be mado to thu building of
the temple (ch. 6), to the building of
Solomon's palace and that for bis
Egyptian wife (ch. 7), and also to the
renewal of tho ark from the "tent ot
meeting," in Zion, to Its new dwelling
place In the temple. Tho time con
sumed In erecting the temple (seven
years, I Kings 6:38), the number of
men employed (approximately 150,
000), and the skill and magnificence of
the building (I Kings 6:7) will serve
as an interesting introduction) to the
dedication ceremonies proper. Those
present dn this occasion are suggested
in verses two dud three; the limo
consumed was seven days (v. 66) and
the condition of Solomon's heart (v. 5)
is seen in tba multitude of his sacri
fices. The temple marks the begin
ning ot a now era in Hebrew history,
ono of great outward glory, though
lt was not one of Inward strength
as the speedy breaking up of the king
dom and tlie final captivities give evi
dence. Professor needier sots tho
date of this event as being "about the
twelfth year of Solomon's reign-Bay
1012 B. C." There has probably not
been in all time a sacred building its
equal for magnificence or situation.
Read any good Bible dictionary for Its
description. It la a type of the Chris
tian (I Cor. 3:10-16).
I. Solomon's Veneration, vv, 22-24.
Solomon's temple was a place of sacri
fice bat more than all lt was a houso
of prayer (Matt. 21:13) and his dedi
catory prayer ls the longest prayer
recorded in tho Scriptures. In it is
to ?>e found no mention of the temple
as ft place of sacrifice, yet no prayer
ls beard apart from sacrifice. Each
article of the temple furniture had its
special teaching hut the greatest teach
ing of all was that of God's proximity
and bis readiness to hear the petitions
of bis serrante. Solomon personally
brought his thanks and his petition
before the altar whereon lay the sacri
fice (see Heb. 0 :?:>.; 10:19, 20; John
14:6), nnd even there he "spread forth
bis handB1* in token of supplication,
adoration and worship. We can "come
boldly to a throne of grace" and need
not priest or sacrament, for we havo
one who "ever liveth to intercede for
ns," Christ Jesus.
II. God's Word Verified, vy. 26, 26.
Solomon repeatedly referrea to the
fact that he has fulfilled God's prom
ise to his father'David in building
the temple. God 4s a covenant-keep
ing God. Upon . this fact Solomon
voices his plea for future blessings.
Every part of this prayer ls worthy
of careful study. Solomon's "there
fore" (?. 25) reveals hlB acceptance
ot God's words to David (cb. 2:4).
Thia word ot Jehovah ls sure and
steadfast (Jer. 33 :17-26) and Solomon's
use of God's promise (2 Sam. 7:12-16)
is an exhortation to us that we base
our petitions upon some one of God's
promises. Praying thus we can rest
assured that our prayer Is in the will
of God and therefore that lt will be
heard (I John 5:14,15).
III. God's Vision; w. 27-30. See also
2 Chron. 7:1-3, 12-22; I Kings 9:1-8.
Aa the king concluded hui prayer the
cloud resting over the holy of holies
grew bright and dazzling and fire fell
upon and consumed the sacrifices; the
priests stood without in awe and
amazement; tho whole people fell opon
their faces, and worshiped and praised
Jehovah. Even with all of this s peela*!
manifestation Solomon did not con
ceive of Jehovah m "local tribal
deity." Earth could not c?i.<aln him,
nor the heaven and tbs ?caven of
heavens (v. 27). God fills tho whole
universe (Ps. 129:7-16) yet ho did and
does give us special local manifesta
tions of himself. It ls this same vast
God who dwelt fully In Jesus Christ
(John ?1*; CoL 2:?). "Will (such a)
God indeed dwell on the earth?" He
who created the universe? Yet thu
God turned ibis vision tr-./ards the
temple "day and night." Solomon cov*
eted auch scrutiny for ta* that templo
God had said: "My name shall bo
there" (v. 29) end his nomo hi "Love"
(I John 4:8; see also 2 Chron. 6:20.
40). This prayer ls for ns granted In
him whom the temple typifies, our
Lord Jesus (John 14:18,14). Tho eyes
of God are ever towards him and
ready to answer-the petition made in
his nama. There ls a great lesson for
the Christian and for the Christians'
special pisces of worship, our
churches, in this wonderful promise ol
Jehovah regarding his name.
Accompanying thia ceremony waa
the "Feast of Tabernacles" (rv. 62,
63; 2 Chron. 7:4-11) which nanally
lasted aaren dsys hot on this occasion
continued for fourteen days. It waa
a time of great Joy . and gladness of
heart' for all the goodness and mercy
of the Lord (see I Kings 6:65/ff; *
Coron. 7:9. 10).
Application. We ara building a tem
ple (Kph; 2:19-22); wa must dedicate
that templa to God (Roan. 19:11); oar
trust; ocr rest will only find its full
aatisfaetlon in bim (Matt: U:i8, 29
and H?b. chapter 4).
