Never Before Hes So Mach Gen
uine interest Been Manifest
ed in jti? City. .
Never before in the history of An
derson, and probably never again in
the future, will there be so. much in
terest shown in an evangelistic meet
ing, as was demonstrated last night
in the McLendon service. The larg
est number of people thaj bas ever ?
assembled In this city to hear an evan
gelist was present and several people
estimated the crowd at something like
7,000. The t?nt was packed and all
tho available space around the tent
was filled with people standing, the
mass reaching back to McDuffie street
os thc eastern side and to Main street
on the' west and all the ground ou
each aldo of the big tent was also
taken.
.Members of several of the Woodmen.
camps of the elty wera in attendance
in a body about 1,000 in tire linc ot
march. The mayoi* and tho city aid*
ermen and other city officials were
also t?tere in a body, aa were tbe
bathers of Anijorson and men ot
other trsdes. It was indeed e pret
ty scene to see all of these men march
into thc tent and take their seats
at the beginning of the services.
The evangelist preached oue of the
beat sermons yet delivered and clos
ed wlUi a mighty appeal to the peo
ple tu give tnelr hearts to Qed and
lead better lives. No sooner had the
invitation been given than men and
women rushed to the front to shake
the evaagetists's hand. In a few mir
?tes the bearers of the differer'.
Woodmen camps' banners stepped out
and marched to the front and they
were followed by many of their fel
low members. In tho^nldst of this,
tho city officials, led by the mayor
marched down from their seats on the
rostrum and grasped Rev. McLendon's
hand. All during this time others
were doing likewise and at the end
ot the meeting lt was announced tbat
577 people had made a profession ot
faith.
The people were so interested last
night that they did not leave before
the service was over, as som have
been doing in the past, but stayeu
unUl the last moment. Many young
men were seen to march from the
outer edges ot the vast crowd on
down the aisle? to tb front.
Tho evangelist stated last night that
he had never before seen such a
meeting and tbst ho was proud or the
people or the city ot Anderson and1
the stand they wera taking tor re
ligion. In his invitation he called
on tba people from Belton, Pelser,
Williamston and other nearby towns
and he mada no mistake tor people
from all over Anderson county were |
seen in the audience last night.
"I nave several texts tonight and
the text is the best part of the ser
mon. If a sermon is .bettor than the
tb? text lt ia not much good. You
w;?i find the first text in Proverbe. |
'The fear of maa brlngoth a anare.'
And it ia bringing a snare that ia {

makes no.difference how much of an
agnostic you may be, you may not
-believe another verse tn the Bible.
Vbut you are compelled to come across
and acknowledge that thia veras ' is j
true. Every man under the soded of
my voice, I do not caro how much o:* K
an atheist ho may be, knowe that tho
?fear of man bringeth a snare. There)
is pe/vdo right here in Anderson who
have been ruined because-of their
crawling, grovelling, grouchy, neu
tralizing, caddish, compromising, ser-:
?sentlne dispositions. How many
es we see men rained because they
did not ha^o the manhood and tbs

the fear of someone's ridicule bas

and tonight he is a poor hard hearted,

"My text ls found in John 12th
chapter, 'Nevertheless among tho chief
rulers many believed.on Him, but be
cause of the Pharisees, they did not :
confess Him, lest they should bo put
out of the synagogue for? they loved
the praise of men more than Hwy did
the nralso of Cod.'
"Now that iras written about Jeru
salem in Christ's time but it oouuds
Just as if it v/as written about somo
people in this community In our time.
A few years ago there was a lumber
jack up in - Northern Michigan, woo
went up Into the woods of Canada to
work during tho winter. He bad re
cently been converted and some bf
bis friends said: 'Look out Jiu., that
ia a tough bunch j' there and'if you
do not watch you v til have a hard time
to live your religion.' He assured
them that he would stand four square
for decency and righteousness. Well,
when the tumor season was over and
he had returned to Iiis old home, his
friends asked him how he had got
along and he said, 'Tba finest kind.'
Why. with those lumber JacLd, X
ti-'jught you would,have a hard time to
ilv? your .religion.' He said, *No, I
didn't say anything.about lt.' That is
tho reason some of you fellows have
such smooth sailing, if is because
you haven't .the manhood to. confess
Christ openly and above board.
"Now turu to my text book. You
will find that In Second Corinthians,
12th chapter. You will find quite a
different proposition here. In the
two texts wo have "JUDI read we havo
the picture of a weak kneed, !
twigged, jelly fished, molly coddle,
soft headed, flabby cheeked, thin
skinned, pliable, plastic, spineless,
sissified, moral cowrd. But now we
get to the picture of the man who
ls on the square with God and fears
nothing but sin. Therefore 1 . lako
pleasure In Infamies, reproaches,
necessities, pers?cutions, distresses
for Christ's sake.' Now here waa .a
man that was reproached for the
name ?t Qod, persecuted because he
stood four square for truth, but al*
though they heaped-'' sui kinds of in
famy on bim, h? looked up vrth a
coining face and said, 'I take pleas
ure tn Infamy, In reproaches and per
secutions. Oh, I'll tel] you fellows,
lt tates grit to live .Tor Jesus Christ.
It take? courage of tho subltaJ?at
kind. ThSt is tho r?aSon that these
fellows with' a cotton string for a
backbone, with two or three ribs tied
to lt. does not make ,'jgood in this
army. I'll tell you What we want
today, we want fighting Cftr&thiaa
and not Christians '.shivering with
ague; Mon vho are not afraid to get
up and' fight for the'.Lord.
"Now I am going to grre a few rea
sons* why every man should confess
Christ before the world. First, there
is nothing to bo ashamed of in Jesus
Christ. A little boy on one occasion
had boen converted and be stood up
und offered ? little testimony. He
stuttered and stammered, and made
a miserable' failure because he bad
not been used to giving public testi
mony. About this timo an old sanc
timonious deacon stood up and milk
ed bis long .white whiskers and he
saht? 'Why hoy ff 1 were yon I would
be ashamed for myself,' and the little
fellow with his knees beating togeth
er like a telegraph instrument, said,
Well, mister, I am ashamed of my
Mtlf hut I am not ashamed' of Jesus
Christ.' Now tho trouble with some
at you people ia that' yon are not
ashamed of yourselves although you
aught to be ashamed to r^oet a bow
legged, box mouthed, bob tailed, glaser
eyed, snaggle toqthed, brindle bull
abg> .Sut yon are ashamed of the
Lord Jesus Christ.
Here the evangelist gave a very
vivid illustration of a Jt;wfss who
worked for Marshall Field in the ctly
ot Chicago.,- Then tho evangelist
went on to any that every mau ought
to confess Christ for the sake of bia

is no man in Anderson who has no

rou men and women c-f Andersen oc
cupying prominent places and posi
tions, would-take your stand -whero

hide of truth and rlghteousrwisn and
