INTEREST GROWING Tent Wes Again Crowded and the Evangelist Says Better Than Expected. Last night, tor the first time trfuce 'he meeting has started here. Rev. B. F. McLendon culled for converts, and 05 rushed down thc ?Isle to grasp his hand. He stated last night that this was far more than he had expected and that everything pointed to a great meeting In Anderson. Thc subject of the sermon last night was "Repentance." an'* ls In substance as follows: "We very seldom hear a s?-mon on repentance today. Plenty of prea .'hers In a long ministry never preached one single sermon on repentance. They have preached on everything else, but have Riven repentance a wide berth Probably for the same reason that the colored preacher never liked to preach ngainst stealing chickens, because it always appeared to throw such a cold ness over the meeting, and made no many of his members freeze up to wards him. No matte- who preaches on repentance he ls bound to stir up a den of snakes. Sam Jones never said anything truer than when he said. 'When you throw a rock Into a gang of dogs the hit dog will holler.' "Of all things that we hate more than anything else, ls to see .lurs^lves as we really are. We hate that which shows up our faults and blemishes. That ls ono reason so many people ?o not like mv plain preaching. No pho tographer would make a living taking pictures If he made a correct HkenesB of everybody who came to him. If ho did not retouch the negntlve and ?nke out tho ugly spots, the woman with o squint and the man with a red wart on his nose would go elsewhere for pictures. It ls said that an elepha:,f will not drink water out of a ? lear i??-o-JHi for when he sees his ugly face reflecting In lt he Is stirred to fury and lusnes inc water into foam. ,phere must be a good deal of human naturo about an elephant or a lot of elophnnt about human nature. This Is the rea son why so many people do not like the Bible; it makes them see their own wicked, devilish hearts. People do not like preaching that goes after them rough shod. They want the 'you tickle me. I tickle you* kind. Preach ing that flabs them on the head and calls them Mary's little lamb. Make a man certain that the Lord admires him and you will be a great preacher to him. "I am ashamed that I ever got low enough down to fight game chickens, 'cause it ls the dirtiest, cruelest sport that I know of today, but I learned one lesson. You can take a cnlcken and he will have all the appearance of thn game and he will tight till he .iles "Ith his natural heels, but put the steelB to him and he can not get away fast enough. "I have put the gospel steels to some of these criticising Anderson knockers, and the old feather-legged dung-hills bave gone to 'he tall tim bers. If you preach on repentance, (you will sure find out there is a devil. It has always been unpopuar and al ways will be unpopular, but God com mands lt, urges it, enforces it. rt peats and drives lt In everywhere. For every one sermon you hear ixreached In our churches today on repentance, you will hear twenty on the love of God. And some of you have been preached to on love so much you are nauseated on,the love '.ne. I am afraid we preachers In our zeal and enthusl - t~ e-pt nennle .into the church, fesve? lowered the bera, we have wld uui tue uoors, but not God's doors. "To multitudes of people nowadays it costs nothing to come into the, church and lt costs nothing to go out. They give up uoiiiiug when they come tn and leave nothing behind when they ro out. Back yonder in the years ago, lt meant something to come to Christ, it was a pilgrimage, it was a warfare, it was a conflict, a struggle, it meant an honest. attempt to do the will of God. We have heard something about self-denial and taking up your cross, lt meant being willing to be a fool for Christ's sake, lt meant coming out and being forsaken, slandered and do splscd persecuted and stigmatised snd ostracised. What does it mean now? It means a card sign, head nodding, eye blinking, trumpt up, sentimental, mechanical, perfunctory, whooped la, social entertainment and with multi tudes of people who call themselves Christians. It means nothing more. "Thank God, Jesus never deluded anybody. He never cried peace when there was no peace, peace while the soul is in anarchy, peace whlla the heart was in rebellion, peace while God was being defiled, peace when I have dethroned the Infinite, peace and the whole man against God. No, you wilt never have peace until you sur render and quit your meanness and come to God through the atoning blood ot Jesus Christ. "I am afraid that we have been go ing ahead of God and counting heads instead of hearts. One-half of the so called backsliders never know God* and they nevi,, front-slid. And one pt the reasons why we have got such a aickly, sentimental, perfunctory crop of so-called believers in the churches who can get up enthusiasm for a fancy affair or theater, 'oat are not there when there is a prayer meeting and they are constcuous by their absence, when Christianizing evangelisation la on hand, ls because they were not born rtght. They skipped, the main busi ness. "John preached repentance. He came to preach it. It had the first place In his sermons. No man that preaches as John did will be popular. >Every gospVl preacher like John Is to ue a messenger. He ls not to originate the message, but simply to give lt an God gives it to him. Ile han ?io right to modify it to suit people's wicked no tions or soothe their wicked hearts. There wan no more flinch In John's preaching than lhere was in a Quaker meeting, ills message was, 'Prepare ye the way of Hie I>ord.' He took ?lead aim nt the fellow on the front seat. "ff John had been like a lot of preachers, obi lccturlst Herol would have been happy every time he 'leard him preach. Why, he would have ca tered to get lils vanity in his very prayers by thanking God that he had p!a< < d over them such a wise and vir tuous king. One who knew what re ligion was and had a dull portion of lt himself." TO BEB?DMES ON S. MAIN STREET New Brick Building Will Take Place of Old Cement Block Walk. Mr. C. M. Guest has secured the contract for the rebuilding of the Jenklns-Mi-Gowan buildings on South Main street, which were damaged by fire several weeks ago, and a force of hands began clearing away the old building yesterday morning. The old cement walls will be re placed with brick walls and the new building will add much to the looks of that section of South Main street. lt has been stated that the new store rooms will cost about 14.000 each, .-tonio work ls to be done on the corn er store to make It in keeping with the new buildings.
