Sermon On Sunday Morning was
On "What Hinders Frayer"
It was Splendid.
Rev. Baxter V. McLendon's Hermon
ta Ht. Jolla's Methodist church la> t
nlKlit wan on the subject of "Per
sonal Work." The church was fill.-il
to overflowing and the congregation
tdiowed much interest. A splendid
choir has been organized and the slug
ing adds much to tile services.
One of the first thing:! the evangel
ist Bald last night was that he was
going to have u revival in Anderson
in spite of the devil und everything
else.
His sermon was from Proverbs
11:30, "lie that win net h souls ls wise."
Mr. McLendon suhl:
"if you walk down thc streets of
Anderson and ask the men you meet,
.Who la the wise man?' a great va
rlety of answers wuuhl be obtained.
Tile lawyer, th? hankel', the mill man,
farmer and tho politician might be
asked and everyone would give a dil
ferent answer, but when you turn
away from mun with all these discord
ant answers and look up to the face
of (Jud arid say. 'Who ls the wise mun '.'
comes thundering down from the
world of light, 'He that wilmet li souls,
in wise.' One reason that we should
win souls is because Jesus (')irist bas
communded UH to do it. Matthew
.JS:r.?, 'Go ye Into all the world and
make disciples of all nations.' That
commandment was followed by every
follower of Jesus Christ In every age
of the church history. Every person
thut claims to he a Christian and is
nut winning men for Christ is dis
obedient to the lx>rd. Jesus said. 'Yo
are my friends, If ye do whatsoever I
command you.'
"This was the business of Jesus
Christ himself; to seek and save the
lost. There was Just one thing He
lived for, one thing Ho suffered for.
one tiling He died for, and that was
io save the lost.
"ls that you.- purpose? ls that
? what you live for? ls that the pas
! sion of your life .' If not, what right
have you to pose yourself off on thia
poor old world as a Christian? Jesus
walked down the banks of tho Sea of
Galilee and said: 'Come and follow
me and I will make you great finan
ciers,' no great politicians, no great
business men, no, but I will make you
fishers of men. and they said good
bye pa. goodbye fishing smack, good
bye old seaweed, goodbyy nets, we are
going to preach the gospel.
"The Lord in 1st Corinthians 1:26.
27, 28 the Instruments that he used:
"1st. Not many wise men after the
flesh. That means the fellow thal
Hasn't much above his collar button.
"2nd. The foolish things ot the
world. That takes In the majority of
you Anderson folks.
"3rd. The weak things of the world,
and here the evangelist impersonated
Oavld and Goliath.
He said that David returned from !
the 'fight wltb a giant's head aud four
rounds of ammunition left over. Then
ha told bow God had mightily used
the base and despised things of the
world. He asked the question. Why
it was that God went ta tho town of
Bennettsville and put bis band on a
cold-blooded, vicious gambler and
.ulbil him to preach the gospel? lt
was because God's ways are not man's
ways. He told the Christian people
In the congregation that an awful re
jponsibi'ity lies at their door and that
Dod wou'd hold them responsible not
only for what they did but also for
what they did not do.
He closed the sermon with the beau
tiful world painting of bow tho right
eous shall shine as the brightness of
the firmament and they that turn
many to righteousness an the stars;
forever and ever.

li aeems that lie puts every ounce
of energy that he ha:t Into his ser

condensing lils thoughts into the sim
plest language. That is evidently one
ur the Beeret? of his great success.
Then by his power of impersonation
in his Hermon Suuday morning on
"What Hinders Prayer," he showed
how isaiah went to Hezekiah an<? ld
him of lils coming death, and d < it
ni . m li a unique wuy Giat people were
laughing one minute and crying the
next.
in his sermon he H'I.. wed the many
things that hinder one's prayers from
going through. One of the lirsi things
enumerated was the selfishness of the
motive that lies back of the prayer;
the next was veneered over and cov
ered up and unconfessed "ins.
The sermon showed how people
have God under complete subordina
tion to pleasure, family, politics, bus
iness and other worldly interests. To
illustrate the evangelist got down on
the tloor to show how people had God
down there, and then he stood up on
a high chair and with his hand
stretched up. showed that all these
things were above God.

"Tho Intelligencer:
"As my young friend, Rev. Baxter
F. McLendon of this city, is now in
Anderson conducting a serien of re
ligious services, with your permission
1 will write a brief letter concerning
him and his work.
"Some of the people will not like
some things McLendon says; they
will criticize adversely, but I beg that
Judgments he withheld until they have
heard all of the evidence.
"Baxter McLendon was born In
Marlboro county. His parents, who
are true, genuine godly people, liver
near the city. His father ls real
Scotch-Irish and one of the best men
I ever knew. Baxter early in Hf felt
that he should ?reach the gospel, but
refused to yield and descended far
into the depths of sta and the cess
pools of Iniquity. He even kept and
fought game chickens and bull dogs
on unday. He ran a blind (open)
tiger in Bennetsville, shot two or
three men, was an expert poker
player.
"I was present and saw bis strug
gle when under conviction, and saw
him when he finally surrendered and
accepted Christ as his Saviour. He
at once turned his back on lils old
comrades, their habits and evil asso
ciations, but bas ever been their true
friends and has helped many of them
into the kiugdom.
"I have known Mac since his early
boyhood and have closely watched his
career since bis conversion, and I de
clare that lie bas been true, straight
and loyal to man and God. He speaks
the truth hf? has been divinely called
tn preach to a lost world and he is
arousing sinners, backsliders an'1
hypocrlts as no other evangelist in
the South IK doing.
"McLendon's labors ns an evange
list aro being "blessed by God, and the
results from bis preaching are great
er perhaps than any Southern evan
gelist. He Is the best paid evange
list in the South today and he gives
his money freely and liberally to the
poor, needy and helpless. Before Mc
Lendon leaves Andmon ho will have
more friends than any man in your
city. He is absolutely fearless and
oblivious nt to all that people say and
think ahou: him. He is endeavoring
to save lost men and women and dig
up slu in high and low places, calls a
'spade R spade' and trusta God.
"The good people, all tho people in
Bennettsvllle and Marlboro county,
fully endorse McLendon, and I trust
