WHY MEN DELAY!
Being an, adaptation to Life Insurance of a well
. known allegory
By F. H. OroHS.
f^e day the Prinee of Devils. PROCRASTINATION, and bis clan of little
Devils, namely-Falsehood, Fear? Worry, Delay, and others who har ress uo
humans, held court. .They nrere met to discuss a very important subject
that ot Life Insurance.
Atter much preliminary discussion the Devil of Falsehood arose and said:
"We will go among thc people and tell them that Ufo Insurance ls NOT a
good thing. We will tell them that it is an unnecessary expense, and the re
turns small and unsatisfactory."
"No, no 1" the rest rejoined, "that win not do at all, , for men realise that
Ufft Insurance I.S a good, thing, ?nd so admit. If we want to kill the good
that Life Insurance does,* .re must get at IHn some other way."
Then the Devil of Sclf-Ocncelt spoke up and said: "We will go to the
people and tell them that Lifo Insurance Companies are unnecessary-that
lt man will put certain amounts of money in the Savings Bank each year, they
will accomplish the same thing by themselves."
Again the meeting demurred. "That won't do al all." they said. "From
our own experience in deceiving men we know ?hat they regard Life Insur
ance highly and as a necessity. They already know from bitter experience
that lt ls costly to their families and themselves to be" without lt. This sec
ond plan will not do. Wo must find &?Ue more effective way:"
Finally, after much heated discussion, during the course ot which ma^y
plans to destroy the usefulness of Life Insurance wero rejected, the great
Devil of Procrastination arose and spoke:
. "Fellow helpers," he said, "lt is very evident from tho discussion bere that
'men reg?rd r,ife Insurance highly, and realise that insuring their Uves is an
act-of wisdom. It would therefore be profitless for .us to try to deceive them
along tbs lines heretofore suggested. Why not let uso devote all our energies
to DELAY! ?? their action? Why set throw a false sense of socurlty around
them? Ten them Life Insurance lil a good thing-4hat they ought to have lt,
d?T that there ? no need for haste-that there is plenty of Urns to act. 'Play
up strong* od**present pleasures and comforts as against the rem?le good
wh?h Life Insurance affords. Life Insurance ls a deliberate attempt on the
part, of a prudent man to build a 'good road' for future cse. We must do all
we can to hinder the building of that road. So, gil forth, my hepers. and
prSAtth DELAY, and fla upon the lives ot men the badge of your King, PRO
CRA8tTNATr.ON.M
And they went forth and did their work as bidden, and that is why there are
eo many men today, who cannot get Insurance They put lt off. snd.put it
off "titi some more convenient day" sad when the convenient dar came they
were no longer insu rabis.

Says Prejudice Agalast Jews h
Strong In This Country.
In the June American Magazine a
Jew writes an interesting article en
titled, "What It Means to Be a Jew."
He relates many personal experienc
es. Following is an extract from his
article:
"Travel in other countries r s con
vinced me that In every section I
visited the Jew was much more re
spected and more frequently received
socially than In the United iStatcs.
Again I ask. Why? Surely you Gen
tiles take into your clubs and homes
people who are woree in every rei
spect than the average Jew or Jew
ess. Admit that they at times lack
polish. Are yon not sometimes badly
veneered? Might not rubbing . up
against each other add to the polish
in one and subtract from tho veneer
in the other? Admitting that there
are desirable and undesirable Jews,
are there* not also desirable and un
desirable Gentiles?
"Frequently this matter has been
discussed with me by the best men
tn our community, anti by presidents
and other officer* of some of these
clubs. They have admitted lt waa a
disgraceful state ot affairs, but have
claimed to be powerless to change
the conditions, but no one has ever
advanced any other reason than sheer
cowardice.
"While no one bas ever openly
suggested to me that financial or
other injury has resulted from the
admission of our people to these
clubs, there might perhaps have been
a ^lurking suspicion to this effect,
and lt may have been covertly assum
ed.
"I know of clubs both East and
West where they have been admitted,
and where, also, they "are regarded
as highly as any other members, and!
where the success ot the club social
ly and as an Instrument ot good itt
the community has been augmented;
and I know of one club In particular
in the East wiiere membership is in
vited too applications are received)
and where at least two of our people
have thus boen admitted, and are al
highly regarded, ana their worth as
thoroughly appreciated, as that of
any other member, and the club has
lost no prestige, on account of their
admission."
