HIS TOWER MAIDEN
(By Constance Morton.)
rCopyrlKiit; by til? McClure* fTJfwTWf
per {Syndicate.)
Strang? to relate Deane Barlow bad
never been In lore-not until that April
evening when be had returned to his
room at Mrs. Filling's boarding house
and had discovered his Tower Lady.
The "tower" wss the narrow, Jut?
ting wing of a fashionable private
hotel around the corner, and at one,
of its lace-4'.tiped windows be had dis
covered li girl'? lovely, wistful face,
sometimes looking out at the eunset
clouds piling la tb? west and Just vis
ible through a .rift in the buildings;
sometimes, and more often, b-.?'.
thoughtfully downward as if she read
a book.
Dean? grew to love ber bair of pale
gold and her eyes of some mysterious
color that distance wonld not reveal.
He worshiped her from afar, for be
knew that tnera waa a wide social bar
rier raised between the occupant of
that luxurious suite and a poor young
law clerk.
; At night the curtains or the "tower"
were drawn and his lady had van
ished. Twenty-four hours must elapse
before he might glimpse her face
again. It wau only in the afternoon
that he saw her; never at other times
or on Sundays.
At the dinner table that night there
was much animation among the board
ers. Miss Brown, who operated the
telephone switchboard In the hotel
around the corner, han revealed'the
tact that there was to be a wedding in
the Palisade the next day-at least one
of the guests waa to be married; had
they not all teen the beautiful Miss
Gladys Elmorton?
"A blonde, Isn't she?" asked Ada
Wesson eagerly.
Miss Brown nodded her head.
Mr. Pilling, who carved '.he roast,
looked up from under his staggy eye
brows.
"Who's sha going to marry?" he
asked gruffly,
"Bradbury Kohler-be's got oceans
of money."
Deane Barlow winced.
Bradbury Kohler was one of hts em
ployers-a big. Jovial, red-faced young
man. So Bradbury was going to
marry Deane'? Tower Lady! No won
der the tower window waa darkened;
the- prospective bride would have no
time now to look with dreamy eyes
into the sunset.
,8o Deane banished his dreams and
plunged into hie work with renewed
industry- There waa .much talk- in
the office about fae wedding and som?
chaffing of the bridegroom when he
returned from a honeymoon spent
abroad.
Then came a momentous day when
Deane, looking ont of his window to
ward his lady'a tower, again aaw her
sweet, serious face turned toward the
sunset clouds. A little wrench at his
heart told him that he had not .suc
ceeded In dismissing her . from his
dreams.
The next morning he happened to
be alone In the office when the door
opened and a young woman entered.
Delicately fair and very lovely In her
summery attire, she turned a pair of
blue eyes on the clerk and smiled
pleasantly.
"Is Mr. Kohler tn bia office':"
"I will Inquire." Dean? placed a
chair for her and waa about to leave
the room when her Tole? detained
him.
"Please tell him Mrs. Kohler ts
waiting for bim," she smiled over ber
shoulder.
Mrs. Kohler! Deane's brain waa
dizzy aa he delivered the message to
Bradbury and followed that happy
bridegroom down the corridor to the
outer office.
"Gladys!" Mr. Kohler greeted her
and tb?, two disappeared toward his
private ciilce..
If this strange young woman was
the wife of. Bradbury Kohler, who,
then, waa the lady of bia tower?
His first move waa'ta inquire of
Miks Brown concerning th? other In
mates ot the Elmorton family. It ap
peared that Gladys waa an om/ child.
But there was another girl there,
too,'Miss Brown acknowledged. Mrs.
Elm?rton's social secretary was Mles
Arts Sandford. Misa Browu knew ber
slightly. Miss 8andford's brother
worked tn the sam? office with Deane.
Ke must know Jack Sandford!
Dean* did know Jack. Sandford aa
?ell aa he know any of his fellow
clerks, i'hey had attended baseball
gamea together, ?nd always lunched
side by aide In the downtown restau
rant. Jack was mar ried and had f re
fluently Invited Deane to his little
hom? in the suburbs, trat Deane had
never, been there. The knowledge that
his-To?er Lady waa sister to his
friend convinced Deane that some
thing more than coincidence waa ?t
work* It waa a kindly tat?-nothing
lesa!
When Jack Sandford repeated his
invitation Deane accepted with flat
tering haute.
And that evening ha met Ma Tower
Lady faee to face. She was more
charming than sh? looked and that ls
saying a great deal.
It wa? many weeks before Deane
had ti?e courage to tell her the story
of hie Tower Lady sad to finally ask
her to be hts wife and sweetheart sad
helpmate-for Ut? wff? of.his dreams
must be all these tarea, things.
And Avia, who loved him for Mm
; ?elf alena, turned her face ap to ala
and there waar a light on lt aa If
j Bathed ia sunset glory. .
