TO OTO SUBSCRIBERS. We desire to call attention to the printed addresses and dates on our papers. We shall be pleased to correct any errors that have oc curred. Each subscriber's account is append ed to his address. Some of our subscribers owe for their sub scription to both the Wcichnan and the South ron. In such cases we hare put the amount doe by them to Aug. 2., SI. For instance: John Doe, 1.70 aug. 2, 81, means that John Doe owes one dollar and Berenty cents up to Aug, 2, 1SS1. This in cludes his indebtedness to both papers. In other cases, where but one paper was sub scribed to, we have simply put the date of that subscription, indicating that the person owes from that date or has paid up to that date. Mrs. James R. McEachern of Providence, and an infant of Mr. John Hurst, of this place, died on the 1st instant. On last Friday Col. Robert L. Heriot, of Mechaoicsville, died very suddenly. A Cor oner's inquest was held and a verdict returned that death resulted from natural causes. Mrs. Mary Barfield, known to the most of our community for her longevity, died yes terday at ten o'clock, at the home of her son, Mr. James Brown, near this place. Her hun dred and fourth birth-day was on the 17th of last September. A child of Mr. J. M. Nelson, of Stateburg died on Saturday last. ' From last Tuesday to the present fire color ed people are reported to have died. A little business called Mr. C. M. Hurst, Jr.. to Washington, last week. Fence law or no fence law, we frequently see cattle on our streets. Hay bas been brought to town lately in vast quantities, averaging doubtless between ten and twenty thousand pounds a week. The price has been 50 cents. Our fire-wells are almost dry, and a con flagration would have its own way. Be care ful about sparks, matches and hot ashes. The Legion of Honor meets to-night, and it is desired that the attendance should be full The Sumter Baptist Association meets at Mayesville nest Tuesday. Mr. W. H. Cuttino and wife have been ab . sent in attendance upon the Charleston Bap t?st Association at Jamison's, Oraogeburg I County. One of our townsmen says the man who wins the prize at glass-ball shooting next year, will have to hit every ball. Numbers of our citizens speak of attending the State Fair this wvek. Reports of several weddings fill the air. We raise no objection, and hope that all the young folks may step off. Bogardus, who allows his son to shoot a glass ball from his father's hand, is to be at the State Fair. We return thanks to those of our subscrib ers who, in these hard time?, have paid their subscriptions. There are others whom we should like to thank. It will be a pleasant announcement to many to know that the Misses Annie and Lily McMahan will soon pay Sumter another visit. The receipts of cotton to date at the R. R. Depot at this place are 77 bales behind last year same date. Miss Adele Kennedy left last week for Max well's Station, N. C, on the W. C. k A. R. R., where she expects to enjoy the exhilarating influences of the delightful climate of the t:Oid North State." Her genial companion ship will be missed the more the longer she is absent from Sumter. Mr. B. R. Nash, the indefatigable commer cial tourist, who is trying to make the lovers of the weed puff none other but the ''Sitting Buli," was in Colorado last week, and sent us several copies of newspapers, for which we are indebted. Mrs Dr. A. L., and Miss Etta Bianding, af ter a pleasant sojourn in Baltimore and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, returned to Sumter last Sunday morning. His Excellency, Governor Hagood, concur ring with the Representatives in their selec tion, appointed, last week, Mr. Robert W. Durant, Sheriff of Sumter County. Mr. Du rant has informed us that he will take posses sion of the Sheriff's office in a day or two. After Mr. Durant has been confirmed, the first thing he will have toset a'out to do is. io bave a gallows built upon which to hang Henry Johnson. Mr. W. I. Earby, better known to some of our community a? Walter I. Moses, who went to Texas more than a year ago, is now oo a short visit to bis old home. Iiis friends and acquaintances v;:I! have the pleasure of greet ing him once more. Mr. Harby says, in re gard to a young man's, chances for business success, there is no comparison between Texas and this Slate. Messrs. Spann and Russel are in receipt of fresh addition to their stock of choice Groce ries. Their new advertisement will appear next week. In the meantime give them a call. We were pleased to receive a visit from Mr. E. 0. Pordy, who has lately moved to Sum ter for the purpose of of engaging in the prac Ji^cof law. ne is a recent graduate of the Vir ginia University, and is a native of that State. Mr. Purdy is a gentlemen of high-k-ne char acter and unexceptional morals, and to young men of that stamp we always give a cordial welcome to our midst. Change of R- R. Schedule. A new Schedule went into effect on last Sunday, by which the Excess train from Wilmington passe.-* Siia??er at 4.52 A. M., in stead of 4.08,' as heretofore. The Local freight Trains now meet here at \ 11.15 A. M. every day. The Through Freight from Florence comes j at2.28 instead of 3.13 A. M. There bas been a corresponding change in the N. E. It. R. The new schedules will appear in full next week. ^ ? A Hew Publication. A political journal, purporting to ' e pub- j lished at Sumter, S. C, but printed a: the: North, appeared here on yesterday. It claims j to be interested in no party nor any man;; but to vindicate the right of free citizenship, j Its first issue departs widely however, from | its professed policy. MB t ? ?
