An expert suggests par ing tlie end of the upper bill to the quirk and then put'lng the hen in a pen on the floor of which a china egg or two may be found; one or two pecks at the imitation egg with the tender bill will quickly cure. Spe cial nests have been devised, so ar ranged that the freshly laid egg rolls away from the hen, but If hen» are given plenty of outdoor exercise and a suitable diet, to include lime and grit, necessary for shell-making purposes, little trouble will ensue. Nests shoyld be arranged far enough from the ground so that hens on the ground cannot reach in and break the eggs, and should be darkened. ALFALFA A GREAT CROP. The summer silo gives the best and most economical protection of all against di-ought. One of the very greatest, crops for the dairyman, and one which is now being successfully grown on thousands of farms In Illinois, is alfalfa. Every dairyman should have a patch of alfalfa, and this will supplv the finest of feed when the drought iias ruined ordinary pas tures. The alfalfa at the University yielded more than six tons of air dry hay per acre last year. Prof Spillman gives an intorostinH rtreount of a notable .ho,a grower who makes a a rent success of it. Ho says that, with spring pigs, by the mid of summer the pigs are made to weigh loo to 120 pounds each, most of this gain being due to a run on mover. The pigs in winter are fed soy beans, hay and an average of about hve pounds of grain per head per day.
