The American Red Cross in France
has established a record for homebuilding.
A call carne to Paris from
"somewhere in France" for three b r
racks. The Red Cross was told that
it would take the workmen at least
five days to erect one budding.Within
that time the Red Cross workers
had all three buildings up and ready
for occupancy. They employed just
23 men on te job.
Red Cross officials determined
some time ago to place "in stock" a
number of portable or demountable
barracks for immediate use whereve
they might be desired. It was d'scovered
that a Swiss manufacturer;
had on hand forty-three buildings'
that were not needed by the Italian
army, for which they had been constructed.
These barracks were of j
special design, ha\'-*g been made!
from plans by an <an army officer!
The Red Cross immediately con- j
tracted for the entie number, obtain-1
ed them and now can ship a home for
forty people to any part of Farnce
on a few hours' notice, and erect it
in les than two days. It has even
supplied the United States Army
with ten of these buildings for immediate
use.

these are absolutely rain and weather
proof, thus assuring adequate protection
in unseasonable weather to refugees,

Each building when set up is about
97 feet long by 17 feet wide with
twelve large windows. The original
barracks had only six windows, but
the Red Cross, acting on the sound
American hygenic principle of "fresh
air and light," put six more in the
ides.
