Anecdote of the Bank of Euglan 1.
An extraordinary affair happeued about
the year 1740. One of the directors, a
very rich man, had occasion for ?30,000,
which he was to pay as the price of r.n
estate he had just bought. To facilitate
the matter, he carried the sum with li'ni
to the bank, and obtained for it a banknote.
On his return home, he was suddenly
called out upon particular business.
He threw the note carelessly on '
the mantlepiece, but when he came (
back *\few minutes afterward to lock it
up, it was not to be found. No one had
entered the room; he could not, therefore,
suspect auy person.
At l;ist, after much ineffectual search,
he was persuaded that it had fallen from
the mantelpiece into the fire. The director
went to acquaint his colleagues of the
misfortune that had happeued him ; and,
as he was known to be a perfectly honorable
mau, he was readily believed, ft

since from the southeastern part < f the
Suite, rueutions the following curous
fact ill natural history. He gives the
statement on the authority of Mr. W. R.
Sin til, a leading farmer and miller hving
near Morley, in Seott county, Mo.
About a ve.ir ago Mr. Smith cay tared

The wild ones became quite tame and
took kindly to the changes of civilized
life. They adapted their habits to the
ordinary delight, of the barnyard, and
swain in the pond with the tame geese,
without showing a disposition to go on a
wild goo^e chase. At length, about tln^.
fourth of November, the weather began
to change, aud after being domesticated
some eiglit mouths the wild fellows
prompted by an instinct to seek a more
suuny clime on the approach of winttr,
spread their wings to the breeze aud
started on a migratory tour, Hying southward.
Their departure was natural and
to be expected. After an absence of two
months, early in January, great was Mr.
Smith's surprise o find, on getting up
one morning, that the two wild geese
had returned to their old haunts on the
farm. They not only returned, but
eleven more wild geese came witli them
as visitors, which they piloted safely
from some Southern bayou. The new
comers made themselves at home, and
were fed and fondled by the children.
They come up to the mill at feeding
time to get their rations, and gabble all
together, and put on all the airs of civilized
geese who have had a good moral
training.
Another Cure for Hydrophobia.
Some curious information has recently
come to light in connection with the
cure of hydrophobia. The Germans, it
is known, used in former days to employ
a medicine composed of a species of
blistering beetle, or Spanish fly, as a
remedial n<rent iu hvdronliobia: and

even as long ago as 1750 the great Swedisli
naturalist, Linmeus, suggested the
employment in such cases of the common
blistering beetle. Since then it has come
to the notice of travelers and men of
science that iu many parts of northern
Africa, as for instance Tunis, the natives
use two species of beetles, very nearly
allied to the blistering beetle, as a cure
for hydrophobia. The medicine thus
composed is known under the name of
denionu, and is mentioned in several
Arabian works 011 medicine. A portion
about the weight of a grain of corn is
given to the sufferer. It is administered
to the person bitten generally iu meat
soup, and must be taken between the
tweutv-first and twenty-seventh day
Rfter the bite; if taken before or after
these dates, it will not affect a cure. The
natives seem to have great faith in this
remedy, and preserve the dried beetles
as a treasure. It might be worth while
to try a sere? of experiments on the use
of the vesicating beetles in this terrible
malady.
Heaping His Reward.
An officer of rural police, in Russia,
when driving on a country road, finds a
dead body by the wayside. Cougratu- #
lating himself on this bit of good luck,
he proceeds to the nearest village, and
lets the inhabitants know that all manner
of legal proceedings will be taken against
them, so that the supposed murderer
may be discovered. The peasants ore
of course frightened, and give liim a
considerable sum of money in order
that he may hush up the affair. An
drdiuarv officer of police would have
been quite satisfied with this ransom,
but the officer was not an ordinary man,
and was very much iu need of money ;
he conceives, therefore, the brilliant idea
of repeating the experiment. Taking
up the dead body, he takes it away in
his tarantass, and a few hours later declares
to the inhabitants of a village
some miles off that some of them have
been guilty of murder, and that he intends
to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The peasants of course pay liberally
iu order to escape the investigation,g?nd
the rascally officer, emboldened by success,
repeats the trick in different villages
until he has gathered a large sum.

fleet was lying in the dry dock, Lieut.
Georges de Kalands, the second officer,
fell in love with Jennie Burdiok, the
foreman's daughter, and like gentle
Alice Brown of the Bab Ballad, she
reciprocated it. The elder Btmlieks
were pleased with the Russian's attentions
to their daughter wo long as they
supposed that nothing would come of
the flirtation, but when he asked their
consent to a marriage and talked of
taking her across the seas, they rebelled
and showed him the door. An elopement
was planned by letter. He was to
ride by the house after dark and on
catching a glimpse of a light in her
window was to lean out of the carriage
and light a cigar. The signals were exchanged
according to the agreement, but
the old gentleman suddenly appeared
with a shot gun and opened fire at short
rauge, whereupon the lover did not tarry
for his sweetheart, but drove back to the
city. She kept her word. Ay! she
dropped like a snow-flake from her
window and floated over a high beard
fence like a feather. Down the road she
tramped without bonnet or shoes, aud
hired a boatman to row her across the
river, her girlish figure shivering in th
night air, her back hair streaming in rhe
breeze aod her pink toes in her tattered
hose freezing iu the leaky galley. It
was rheumatic and romantic. She summoned
her lover and was escorted by
him to a boarding house, where her
father found her on the next day and
carried her home, with tears in her eyes
aud a bad cold in her head. Iu a few

and a faint touch of the old rheumatism,
she will go to him.
On Sable Island.
Many years ago, the government of
Nova Scotia assumed the projee4 of
placing a number of sheep or swine 011
Sable island to avert the danger of starvation
to which seafarers escaping from
wrecks had been exposed. But these
animals could not subsist on the only
shrub which thrives in the sands of the
otherwise ban-en isle of Sables. An old
French doctor suggested a trial of the
tough and shaggy little horses known sv;
C iuadinu ponies, and forthwith a detachment
of them w.ih forwarded in the
government steamer to Sable island.
The nnfastidious ponies took kindly to the
solitary shrub, made the island their
homo, and became wild in time. Recent
exports from the isle of Sables, or Sable
island, as it is variously called, show
that the ponies are. becoming almost ey
tinct, owing to the frequent capturing of
