IMPOKTANT FACT.-A letter from
Paris to a New York cotempornry, in
speaking of the cholera in France,
and particularly in the capital of that
country, states the fact as an impor?
tant one, and one -which carries im?
mense weight, that with the cholera
deaths at near a hundred a day in
Paris the total bill of mortality is not
increased, the reason being that peo?
ple take proper care of themselves,
and the other ordinary maladies which
prey upon human life are not devel?
oped- Thus, if people were to eat
correctly, clothe themselves correctly,
avoid currents of air and Budden
transitions from hot to cold, the mor?
tality of the city of two millions
might be reduced something ap?
proaching to a hundred per cent., or
three-fourths its ordinary mortality.
The following populations of thc
cities of the United States, which
number over 50,000, are from official
data in the Interior Department.
Several of these cities have largely
increased since 18G0. None, however,
so much as Washington, which has,
undoubtedly, doubled in population :
New York, 805,650 ; Philadelphia,
585,529 ; Brooklyn, 280,661 ; Balti?
more, 212,418 ; Boston; 177,812 ; New
Orleans, 168,675; Cincinnati, 1G1.044;
St. Louis, 160,773; Chicago, 109,260;
Buffalo, 81,129; Newark, 71,914;
Louisville, 68,033; Albany, 68,367;
Washington, 61,122; San Francisco,
56,802; Providence, 50,666.

cored apple with ground cinnamon
and sugar; take as many large spoons?
ful of sago as you have apples; mix
it with a little cold water; turn in as
much boiling water as will fill the
pudding-dish; stir it all the time till
it begins to thicken; then cover it up,
and let it stand about two hours, until
the sago swells; then turn it into the
dish, set it into a pretty hot oven,
and bake it two hours. To be eaten
with sugar and cream.
The tailor to the King of Italy has
just introduced an article that is
likely to make a sensation. It is a
black velvet dress coat, witb jet
buttons, and white satin lining. This
coat is particularly intended to re?
place the old-fashioned black cloth
dress coat. The waistcoat to accom?
pany it is in white moire or white
silk. The pantaloons in light grey
cloth, falling over the bottine, which
imitates an embroidered silk stocking.
