PAIIi'Y N EWS. TH??t?DAY MOHNINO." AUGUST 3U 1865. "local matters. To otm City Sciibcriueiw.?Wo would bo thank ful if there ?b any failure on the part of our car riers to deliver tho Daily News, if our city sub scribers would give us immediate notice. Every effort on our part will bo mado to secure an early delivery, and if tho carriers fail in doing their duty, wo hope to bo immediately informed of it. Health of the City.?Tho City Registrar (Dr. Ceo. H. Pelze a) has sent us for publication tho Bill of Mortality for the week ending August 2Gth. By it wo discover that there have been C3 doaths in that time, 3(? of which, aro blacks and colofed, and 17 whites?tho number of tho former being moro than double tho latter. This is a singular fact, that wc havo no remembrance of having over observed before, and it should elicit attention and inquiry. In examining tho statement befara us, wo Und 8 caso? of fevers of different Itinds?2 whites and G blacks ; of diarrhoea, 5 cases?all blacks ; of old ?go, 4 casos?all blacks. Of tho other diseases none aro extraordinary, but only those from which wo alwayB suffer nfc this Boason, and of which but fow havo been fatal. Upon tho wholo, if any doubts exist, out of the city, in regard to tho good health of Charleston, an' examination of tins doc ument in our paper of to-day ought to satisfy all roasonablo minds. Tue Charleston Gas Works.?The remarks of yesterday in this journal have been understood as convoying a censure on the ofliccra of this compa ny. Tlioy were not so intended. During four years of war the gas works havo been rapidly wearing ou'.; tho great depreciation of tho medium in which they wcro paid, and tho impossibility of procuring much of the material wanted for a re newal of tho worn-out parts, placed the works in a position of much embarrassment at the time the city was occupied by the Union troops. They were without funds, and stood in need of almost every thing. By the energy of a portion of tho direc tion tho difficulties have, to a certain degree, boon overcome; somo coal has been obtained from tho Worth, and Bcvcral hundred tons lately from Eng land. Through tho generosity of an English houBO the company will bo furnished with coal sufficient to carry thorn to January next on a lib eral credit; and measures have been inaugurated which, if carried out, will place the company in a XQ03t satisfactory condition. Lookino Like Business.?The artizans of our city are particularly busy at this timo in re pairing and fitting up buildings and stores. IiOads of lunibor and other stuff are continually pasfing along to different portions of the town, where they are used by mechanics in refitting damaged establishment*! and making them suita ble for occupation. Lu,Meeting, Hayno andBroad etreots, and on East Bay, four important business avenues, tho workmen aro actively engaged at their work, endeavoring to fulfill numerous con tracts, which must be completed in time to allow tenants to lay in stock for their fall trade. The establishments on King-street wore repaired and occupied soon after tho ovacuation, and for a long timo not a place suitable for business in that por tion of the city has been obtainable. Meeting street was next resorted to, and the buildings there renovalod and taken possession of as soon as in a tenantablo state, so that at present there are nono in that locality to be rented. Wo arc inform ed that the thrco stores nearly opposite Haync street, so badly damaged by lire some time ago, will bo shortly robuilt and occupied, making that rango completo. In the other streets we have mentioned tho scarcity is just as great, and we hoar every day of applicants for business stands, who are as yot unsuccessful in their inquirios. Privatc.rcsidencofi, at a moderate rent, arc also in request; the owners of many who would lease not having the means to repair, are compelled to have them remain on their hands in a dilapidated state, useless to all. If an arrangement could be made by which men of means could assist mon of property of this class, giving them time, at a legal interest, with a mortgage on the real estate, it would bo highly advantageous to the community . generally. We are disposed to tliink that some moneyed men will, in the courso of the season, enter into such investments for the benefit of such owners; for while there are many of them who think only of gain, there are certainly others who always connect kindness with profit. In thus looking around and seeing the present prosperous condition of our city, and believing that in a short time it will be much greater, we feel a thankfulness it is difficult to give expression to?it is in tho heart alone, not in tho tongue that speaks. Wo fool tho great load of dejection that overprcasod us rapidly passing off, as wc see each now placo of business opened and its occupants actively engaged in trade; and wo wish that somo of thoso who are always predicting, with solemn face, that "Charleston is done for," would go around and seo what wo havo bo slightly alluded to above, and wo guarantee that they would agreo Willi us in saying that the old city is fast recupe rating, and beforo a great length of time will re assume the position she onco held among the populous placea of tho Union. ' A. Coroner's Inquest was held yesterday, 30th hist., at junction of King and Meeting streets, on tho body of Phoobe Thompson (colorod). Verdict, "Death from Hemorrhage." U-?S. Marshal_Wo understand that W. J. Gayes, Esq. has been appointed by the President United States Marshal for this District. Mustered Out.?Eighty-five Major and Briga tlicr-GonoralB have been lately honorably dis charged from the servico of tho United States Among them wo notice tho names of Major-Gen Abner Doudledav and Brig.-Gcn. Tbui?an Hey MOtm. Quinn A Bbother?Wo are indebted to those gentlemen for full files of tho Now York dailios.
