ship?and the Sunday .school embraces infant
instruction and training, Rothat any interest or
action in reference to Sunday School is in refer
ence to a substantial part*of our religion and
its outward manifestation.
Like other branches of this great saving
system it has its difficulties, and some of thcin
are peculiar to us When devastating armies
over-ran" our couri'try. and occupied our
Churches, they scattered our Sunday School
books away far and wide, and in sonic cases
even took the pulpit books away from their
cushions, and having desolated our fields it has
left many of our Schools destitute of'booKs.
There has been such a want of teachers as
to some extent to damage our Suudny-Sehool
cause. To reform the old ami hardened sin
ner?to break the yoke of sinful bondage which
has been fastened on thu neck of the old four
scores of years?)' to' ''force- in the heads and
hearts of those who have entertained ignorance
and superstition, knowledge and the love of
God, duty to Him might indeed be discour
aging; but to find a backwardness in teaching,
guiding, leading dear young precious children
in the sweetness;and simplicity of childhood is
a fault v. e ought not to lind in any who believe
our doctrines, or who look teilte future' with
interest; - >
There have been ?some cases where there
have been men and women ready to teach but
the attendance of children could not be secured.

admitted 1 hat they, the parents, needed the
Church by joining it; but their children did

country gives such discouragement as your

have sprung up around us which should make
Methodism pause before she suffers these or

day school activities. Her aggressive action

the thousands of unconverted out in the broad
world; but by the power which Methodism it
self hac put forth amongst the churches, there
is now found but few families not under some
denominational influence. So that if .Metho
dism is to live in the future it must live in the
hearts and profcssiouB of these.children who
must bear our names when we lie in the dust,
and on the fields of missionary labors where
Methodism is attacking the strongholds of
Satan in heath end- in. That our church may
be true to her children and "the heathen in his
blindness" is.ouly to wish und pray that she
may continue to be a church of our Lord and
Saviour .Jesus Christ.
