stroke of paralysis a few years
ago and has been confined to his

Wednesday last ho suffered anothor
stroke and it beeifnio apparent
at once that the end was near

and Mrs. ,)os. K. Hall of McConnellsville,
were telegraphed for

1S56 and was admitted to tin bar

to tho Governor as a soldier to
tight the battles of his country .
He was nppointod Lieutenant in a
regular squadron of cuvulry and
was immediately ordered into service
January 1861,1.ho and Lieut.
Billings being among the tir?t men
from Lancaster County to enter
tlicilate Confederate service. lie
was sent out recruiting and soon
after was transfored to the 1st S
C Regular Infantry. In 1863 he
was promoted Captain of Cmopany
C. The regiment acted as ho: vy
artillery and mannod the forts
Moutrie, Sumter, and the batteries
around Charleston and was in all
the engagements in and around
that city and remained thero with
the regiment until tho evacuation
of the city, February 1865, when
they joined Johnson's army in N
C.,with which army the regiment
surrendered at Grornshoto N (\;
he having bwen within the hearing
of the first and las' gun of tlu> great
war of Secession.
After the war he renewed the
practice of law for a short time
whon he gave it up to onter the |
insurance business which he has
carried on successfully ever sinco.
Shunning political preferment, ho
refused at all limes to permit his
name to bo used for public office
though often elected and serving
as mayor of tho Town. Perhups
no ono person in the town over
served as often in that capacity
from which fact may he infored
tho satisfaction with which l ?'
tilled tho office. He was appointed
Magistrate just after tho win
cloned by Gov Pojry again by
Gov. Orr, and during a portion < f
Gov. Scott's term until tho lcpnb*

then in 1876 when Hampton re
