On last Saturday evening about T
o,clock a negro entered Iho house
of a well known citizen of the
iiupil neighborhood, a few miles
below this city and it is supposed
that his visit was with evil intention.
lie did not attempt to
steal anything.
All of the male members of
the family where away from home
and only several ladies were at
home. Upon thcii giving t'no
alarm several neighbors came to
their a-vistunco and the negro lied
llo was caught but after a littlo
while managed to escape. In
the pursuit several shots were
fired at the negro, who took tu
tlio swamp.
The negro was pursued by quite
a party, but he was liuully caught
by Mr. J. U. Murphy, who
brought him to Orangeburg and
lodged him in jail the sumo evcuj
ing. Tho negro had been shot in
his efforts to escape boforo his arrest
and was considered at the
time to be rather seriously wotin.eed.
lie was taken care of in tbejail
and a war'ant s.vorn out for him
but ho died this morning from the
eiroct of his wounds. The negro
was known as Lawrence Gadsden
and it is said that he had marks on
his back of having previously received
a load of shot. lie had
for some limo been working on
the railroad and ho is said to have
home a rather hud reputation.
