These factories have given employment to hundreds and thousands of poor families since the 'year 1819, when he entered the Weaver Factory, on Tyger River, in Spartan burg District, a poor and friendless boy. These fncturies have likewise contributed largely to the wealth and convenience of the whole upper country. They have also encouraged the erection of others in the middle districts, and in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and other States. Mr. Rates was born in Ruode Island, in the year 1800, and was seventy two years old at his death, a week or two since.
